French Open – Day 1

The first day of the second grand slam is done and what a day of tennis it was. The first match on Philippe-Chatrier and the first major upset in this years French Open. One of the favourites for the tournament, 6th seeded Ons Jabeur, was knocked out by unseeded Linette in 3 tight sets. An amazing result for Linette who came back after losing the first set. Former French Open finalist and a man struggling to find a win, Dominic Thiem was another big name to be knocked out in the first round. He was beaten by Dellien in straight sets. Sloane Stephens had to come back from a set down to book her spot in the second round. The second match on Philippe-Chatrier was beaten Auger-Aliassime and Varillas. This was a big stage for both players but a little surprisingly it was the unseeded Varillas who came out firing as he cruised to a 2 sets to love lead. Thankfully for many who picked the Canadian, he managed to find his feet in the third set and completed the comeback to book his spot in the 2nd round. Another big name who lost out today was the ladies 10th seed, Muguruza. She was playing the well known Kanepi and on paper it looked like a tough 1st round and in reality it was for the 10th seed. Muguruza managed to win the 1st set comfortably but couldn’t finish the match off as Kanepi came back to win in 3 sets. There were no other real upsets in the ladies draw. Cirstea, Muchova, Teichmann, Sakkari, Mertens, Bencic and Fernandez all won their 1st round matches in straight sets. On the mens side, the 25th seeded Spaniard – Davidovich Fokina – was knocked out by Griekspoor in 4 sets. The 31st seeded American, Brooksby, was also knocked out comfortably by Cuevas. Karatsev who was picked by 13 teams was knocked out after losing the 5th set super-tiebreak 10-5. What a match on court 12. There were no more upsets after that with Schwartzman, Dimitrov, Van de Zandschulp, Isner, Khachanov, Fognini, Zverev and Alcaraz all managed to win their first round encounters.

Now we move onto the fantasy league. Day 1 saw the loss of 4 male picks (Thiem, Davidovich Fokina, Karatsev and Brooksby) and 4 ladies picks (Muguruza, Jabeur, Martic and Galfi).

Our first leader of this years French Open is ‘Serve with eish’ on 31 points. An amazing start from them. There is a tie for second between ‘Billancourt’ and ‘White Lines’ who sit on 28 points. GG’s sit in 4th with 26 points and ‘Clay Kings’ round out the top 5 after day 1. Watch out for ‘Uptown Ronnie’, ‘Bolt’ and ‘Madame Monsieur’ who have not had any of their picks play yet and could move up the leaderboard.
