French Open – Day 2

The second day of the French Open was rain interrupted but was another day full of twists and turns. The 13th seed, Fritz, had to come through a 5 set encounter to book his spot in the 2nd round. The 17th seeded, Opelka, was knocked out as Serbian, Krajinovic, beat him in straight sets. Former champion, Stan Wawrinka, lost to Frenchman, Moutet in 4 sets. The Frenchman has now got a meeting against the 13 time Roland Garros Champion, Nadal. Basilashvilli, the 22nd seed, was so nearly knocked out as he was 2 sets to love down. He managed to take the 3rd set 10-8 in the tiebreak and then managed to take the next 2 sets to keep his campaign alive. Evans, Norrie, Nadal, Djokovic, Fucsovics and Cilic all managed to win their matches in straight sets and reach the 2nd round at this years French Open.

The day started off with some very exciting ladies matches on paper and they didn’t disappoint. The biggest of the matches was certainly Anisimova up against Osaka. The American beating Osaka in straight sets, 7-5; 6-4. Andreescu and Azarenka both had to comeback after they both lost the first sets. Both secured the comeback and are through to the second round. The number 1 in the world, Swiatek, made it 29 wins in a row as she cruised past Ukranian, Tsurenko. She just dropped 2 games as she booked her spot in the 2nd round. The defending champion and number 2 seed, Krejcikova, who was coming back from an injury was up against French player, Parry. Krejcikova took the opening set comfortably but as she was out of match practice couldn’t keep her level up. The defending champ was knocked out at the first hurdle. The 5th seed, Kontaveit, and 25th seed, Samsonova, were also knocked out in the 1st round. Raducanu kept her campaign alive as she fought back from a set down to book her spot in the 2nd round. The 21st seed and winner of last weeks 250 tournament, Kerber, found herself 5-3 down in the 3rd set. This didn’t bother her as she won 4 games on the trot to avoid being knocked out in the 1st round.

Onto the fantasy league, and amazingly not 1 male pick was knocked out on day 2. On the ladies side however, we lost 5 picks (Krejcikova, Parrizas-Diaz, Dodin, Osaka and Kontaveit).

‘Serve with eish’ keeps their lead from yesterday. They lead ‘Born 2 Serve’ by 2 points. ‘Billancourt’ remains in the fight in 3rd with ‘White Lines’ and ‘Chalk Dust’ in a tie for 4th. ‘Madame Monsieur’ currently has the wooden spoon, but still lots of points up for grabs.
