Australian Open – Day 2

Day 2 was just as good if not better than day 1. There was some absolutely cracking tennis to watch today. The day started with the 15th seed, Bautista-Agut coming through his first round match in 4 sets against Italian Travaglia. Australian, O’Connell came through in front of his home crowd against Frenchman, Gaston. The first upset of the day in the mens draw was Gasquet who knocked out fellow Frenchman and 29th seed, Humbert, in 4 sets. Gasquet coming through 3-6; 7-6(4); 7-6(3); 6-3. Schwartzman managed to come through a tough oppenent on paper, Krajinovic, in straight sets. Rublev, Medvedev, Evans, Sinner and Tsitsipas all started their Aussie Open with comfortable straight set wins. Paire managed to keep his cool for once as he came through Brazilian, Monteiro, in 5 tight sets. Paire taking the match, 6-4; 3-6; 7-5; 2-6; 7-5. Unseeded American Cressy managed to beat fellow American and 22nd seed, John Isner, in 5 sets. Cressy was coming in, in good form and proved it as he won 7-6(2); 7-5; 6-7(4); 6-7(4); 6-4. Andy Murray excited his British fans as he came through a tight 5 setter against 21st seed, Basilashvilli. Murray and Basilashvilli played for almost 4 hours with Murray winning 6-1; 3-6; 6-4; 6-7(5); 6-4. Auger-Aliassime hot off his win with Canada at the ATP cup struggled in the 1st round. He came through Ruusuvuori in 5 sets – 6-4; 0-6; 3-6; 6-3; 6-4. Tiafoe was another player who had to come through in 5 sets. He was pushed all the way by Trungelliti eventually winning the 5th and final set 6-3. 32nd seed, Alex De Minaur, beat young Italian Musetti in 4 sets to keep the Aussie faithful happy. His compatriot Kyrgios managed to also come through in his match to reach the 2nd round. Kyrgios sets up a mouthwatering second round where he will face 2nd seed, Medvedev.

On the ladies side, Australian Sam Stosur beat American Anderson to reach the second round. Cirstea provided the first upset of the day on the ladies side as she knocked out 20th seed, Petra Kvitova in 2 comfortable sets. Muguruza, Kontaveit, Swiatek, Pavlyuchenkova, Halep and Collins all came through their first round matches in 2 comfortable sets. Maddison Inglis used the power of her home crowd to play an inspired match against the US Open finalist Fernandez. Inglis winning 6-4; 6-2 and is through to the 2nd round. 12th seed Rybakina was up against fellow countryman Diyas in her first round. These two ladies played a very tight match which lasted 2 and a half hours. Rybakina managed to keep her hopes alive as she won 6-7(3); 7-6(3); 6-1. 2nd Seed, Sabalenka was pushed in her first round match. She dropped the first set to Australian Sanders but Sanders couldn’t pull off the upset as Sabalenka came back to win in 3 sets. Kanepi knocked out 16th seed and birthday girl, Angelique Kerber in straight sets. Kanepi coming through 6-4; 6-3 and will face Bouzkova in the 2nd round. Last match on was between Us Open champion Emma Raducanu and another US Open champion and newly married Sloane Stephens. On paper it was a match to watch but the first set only lasted 17 minutes as Raducanu took it 6-0. Stephens used her experience and made a comeback as she managed to take the 2nd set 6-2. Who was going to start off the 3rd set the best was the question. Sadly for Stephens she came out a bit flat in the 3rd set and found herself 4-0 down. She couldn’t recover the deficit as Raducanu took the match 6-1 in the third.

Onto the fantasy league and we have a new leader. ‘You’ve met your Match’ has taken the overall lead by 1 point over last nights leaders ‘Justice’. ‘Hawkeye’ is just 3 points off the lead in third. Then there are 4 teams all tied for fourth and just 5 points off the leader. This is set up to be a tight affair at the top. At the bottom of the leaderboard we have ‘Hit and Run’ and ‘Vax on Vax off’ who are 2 points ahead of the current wooden spoon holder ‘Another Try’.
