Australian Open – Day 1

The first day of the first grand slam of the year is complete. Day 1 of the Australian Open had it all, with some comfortable wins to some 5 setters. Ash Barty was the first match on in the night session and she was up against Tsurenko who had beaten her before. Tsurenko though came up against a rampant Barty who managed to win 6-0; 6-1 in just 54 minutes. Earlier in the day session, Sakkari, Bencic and Svitolina all came through their first round matches in straight sets. One of the upsets of the day because 8 teams had her was Alexandrova losing in straight sets to American Pera. The defending champion,Osaka, who over the past year has struggled with mental health came through her first round match 6-3; 6-3. The 21st seed American, Jessica Pegula came through a tough first round match against Ukranian Kalinina 4-6; 7-6(1); 7-5. Another major upset on day 1 was the 18th seed, Coco Guaff, who ended up losing to Wang in straight sets 6-4; 6-2. Sofia Kenin ,a past Australian Open winner, also bowed out. She lost to fellow American Madison Keys. Keys came into the grand slam with a title and her serving proved to good for her fellow compatriot as Keys took the match 7-6(2); 7-5. Last match on Margaret Court was between Australian Tomljanovic and newly crowned champion in Sydney, Paula Badosa. This was set up to be a mouth watering contest and the first set didn’t disappoint with Badosa just taking it 6-4. Badosa then proved too good as she went on to take the 2nd set 6-0. Badosa could be one to watch at this years Aussie Open.

In the men’s draw, it wasn’t a good start to the day for us South African’s. We awoke to the news that Harris lost to an Australian wildcard in 4 sets. It didn’t get much better for us as Anderson also lost later in the day against 23rd seed Opelka in straight sets. There were some epic 1st round matches in the mens draw. Kwon managed to beat Rune in 5 sets. 16th seed, Garin, came through in 5 sets against Argentinian Bagnis. Lajovic beat Fucsovics and Mannarino knocked out Australian Duckworth in 5 sets. Alcaraz, Monfils and Nadal all came through their 1st round matches in 3 comfortable sets. 7th seed, Berrettini, played through some stomach issues to beat young and upcoming American Brandon Nakashima in 4 sets. From missing the lead up tournaments because of having to quarantine, Korda managed to comfortably beat the 12th seed Cam Norrie in straight sets – 6-3; 6-0; 6-4. 10th seed Hurkacz came through a tight encounter against Gerasimov. Hurkacz led 2 sets to love and was serving for the match. Gerasimov managed to break back and the 3rd set went to a tiebreak. Gerasimov managed to take the tiebreak and send the match to a 4th set. Hurkacz though was calm and won the 4th set 6-3. 2 slightly surprising losses were Fognini who lost in straight set and Australian Kokkinakis who also lost in straight sets. Lost match that was on court was between 18th seed Karatsev and Munar. These two played an incredible match which almost lasted 5 hours. It eventually ended after 4 hours and 52 minutes. Karatsev taking the match 3-6; 7-6(1); 6-7(3); 6-4; 6-4.

Onto the leaderboard. Our early leaders are ‘Justice’ who have a 6 point lead over ‘You’ve Met Your match’. In 3rd just 1 place off 2nd is ‘Aussie Express’. At the other end of the leaderboard we have ‘Another Snob 2’ who sit on 7 points. and 1 place above them is ‘2nd choice’ on 8 points. Remember, round 1 is still not complete so leaderboard will fluctuate tomorrow.
