US Open – Day 5 – Round 2
🎾 US Open 2025: Drama, Dominance, and a Dash of History in Rounds 1 & 2
The 2025 US Open has wasted no time delivering the kind of tennis that keeps fans glued to their screens and seats. With the final Grand Slam of the year underway in New York, the opening rounds have already served up a cocktail of upsets, comebacks, and record-breaking performances. Here’s a look at the biggest stories from Rounds 1 and 2.
🌟 Round 1: Legends Return, Young Guns Fire
Novak Djokovic, the 38-year-old titan, kicked off his campaign with a straight-sets win over Learner Tien. Despite nursing a toe injury, Djokovic showed his trademark grit, especially in a tense second-set tiebreak. Tien, a promising 19-year-old, had flashes of brilliance but couldn’t match the 24-time Grand Slam champ’s experience.
Aryna Sabalenka, the defending women’s champion, overcame a spirited challenge from Rebeka Masarova. After a tight first set, Sabalenka steamrolled through the second, reminding everyone why she’s the No. 1 seed.
Iga Swiatek made headlines not just for her dominant win over Emiliana Arango (6-1, 6-2), but for becoming the first woman to notch 50 match wins in four consecutive seasons—a feat unmatched in the Open Era.
On the flip side, Venus Williams, making a valiant return at age 45, bowed out in a three-set battle against Karolina Muchova. Though she showed glimpses of her vintage form, the Czech star proved too strong in the decider.
🔥 Round 2: Seeds Survive, Upsets Brew
Carlos Alcaraz, the No. 2 seed, looked untouchable in his second-round match, dismantling Luciano Darderi 6-2, 6-4, 6-0. The Spaniard’s blend of power and finesse continues to make him a favorite for the title.
Jannik Sinner, the top seed and defending champion, breezed past Alexei Popyrin in straight sets. His form is peaking at just the right time.
Coco Gauff, the 2023 champion, had to dig deep against Donna Vekic. After a nail-biting first-set tiebreak, Gauff found her rhythm and closed out the match 7-6(5), 6-2.
Naomi Osaka, back in Grand Slam action, looked sharp in her 6-3, 6-1 win over Hailey Baptiste. Her return has added another layer of intrigue to the women’s draw.
But not everyone made it through unscathed. Casper Ruud, the No. 12 seed, was stunned by Raphael Collignon in a five-set thriller.
đź’¬ Final Thoughts
