US Open – Day 3
Day 3 of the US Open had it all. From comebacks to 5 set thrillers to easy wins meaning some high scores scored by many players in terms of the fantasy league.
Those who has Griekspoor had an amazing day 3 because he got a walkover win but not before he took the opener 6-1 and to make matters even better his opponent was a seed. This meant he scored a whopping 12 points on day 3 alone so well done to those who picked him.
Etcheverry was another who got a win over a seed, the seed being his fellow countryman and 29th seed, Cerundolo. Etcheverry winning that match in a 5 set thriller 6-3 in the 5th set to book his spot in the next round.
32nd seed, Lehecka, many will be relieved to know survived on day 3. The Czech player was 2 sets down and a break down at 3-0 in the 3rd set before recovering to win the match in 5 sets against Krueger. The score was 6-7(5); 0-6; 6-4; 6-4; 7-5.
6th seed, Rublev was another who had to battle from 2 sets down to book his spot in the 3rd round. The 6th seed beating Rinderknech – 4-6; 5-7; 6-1; 6-2; 6-2.
The 17th seed, Humbert was another seed to fall on day 3 as he lost in 4 sets to Argentinian, Comesana.
18th seed, Musetti, was another who needed 5 sets to book his spot in the 3rd round. The Italian managed to take the match against Kecmanovic – 3-6; 6-4; 6-4; 2-6; 7-5.
In terms of the fantasy league the big match on day 3 was between Fritz picked by 27 people and Berrettini who was picked by 20 people. The American and 12th seed, Fritz, managed to notch up a statement win as he cruised past Berrettini in straight sets.
The men who all did not need 5 sets and booked their spots in the 3rd round more comfortably were: Dimitrov, Nakashima, Zverev, Tiafoe, Shang, Popyrin, Shelton, Djokovic and Ruud.
The big name to lose on the ladies side was 8th seed, Krejcikova, who lost in straight sets to the unseeded Romanian, Ruse. This was a huge disappointment to the 18 teams who had her in their teams.
7th seed, and newly gold medalist, Zheng had to battle again in 3 sets to beat E.Andreeva and book her spot in the 3rd round.
The only other big name to fall on day 3 was 12th seed, Kasatkina, who lost in straight sets to unseeded American, Stearns. Just 1 team cashed in with this win as they have Stearns.
Navarro, Vekic, Azarenka, Gauff, Svitolina, Sabalenka, Kostyuk, Keys, Badosa and Mertens all cruised through their matches. Navarro with a consecutive 6-1; 6-1 win making her the best lady pick so far at the US Open 2024.
Onto the fantasy league and it was a day of big highs for some and big losses for others. So many players picked up some big wins scoring them bonus points and unfortunately if you did not have the right players, you lost out big time on day 3. I think Day 3 was one of it not the highest scoring day for the year over all grand slams. So who did enjoy day 3 then.
Our leader from day 1 is back to the top as ‘Stars and Stripes’ take the lead and sit on 102 points but they are not alone and are joined at the top on 102 points with ‘Lord of the Strings’. The next highest is 9 points further back and this is day 2’s leader ‘Dropshots’. 4th place is ‘Aim for Fame’ who was 1 team who absolutely loved day 3 moving up 40 places into the top 5. ‘Concrete Jungle where dreams are made of’ sit in 5th spot and then the last 2 prizes are being split between 3 teams as there is a 3 way tie for 6th between ‘Hit and Run’, ‘Team Kickbutt’ and ‘Flush’.
Our wooden spoon is back in the hands of ‘Toppie’ who sit on just 43 points and are now 10 points behind their nearest rival.
