Wimbledon Championships – Day 6

Day 6 of this years Wimbledon Championships was a day where most games were completed despite more rain.

Haddad Maia started off the day with her best performance so far as she dispatched of Cirstea in straight sets, winning 6-2; 6-2. The 21st seed, Alexandrova who like Haddad Maia has had to fight threw some extremely tight matches so far made light work of the unseeded Galfi in the 3rd round as she won 6-0; 6-4. The 9th seed, Kvitova beat Kostic in straight sets but not as comfortably as Haddad Maia and Alexandrova.
Sabalenka, Keys and Ryabakina all showed some impressive form in their 3rd round wins as they all won comfortably in straight sets. Last years finalist however Jabeur had a tough time in her 3rd round match against former US Open winner, Andreescu. Jabeur went a set down before winning the next 2 sets 6-3; 6-4 to beat Andreescu and book a meeting against Kvitova in the 4th round.

There were some exciting matches in the mens draw on day 6. The first was between unseeded Lehecka and 16th seed American, Paul. Lehecka continued his impressive form in this years championships as he took the first 2 sets however Paul was also playing some great tennis and after the rain break in the 3rd set, Paul took the next 2 sets in tiebreaks to set up a final set shootout. However it was Lehecka who raced away in the 5th set to book his spot in the 4th round where he will face Medvedev for a spot in the quarter-finals. Eubanks who was coming off some impressive grass court form won in straight sets against O’Connell. All sets going to tiebreaks and all tiebreaks were won by Eubanks. Impressive from the tall American. Medvedev as mentioned above will face Lehecka in the 4th round and this was after he defeated Fucsovics in 4 sets after he dropped the first set. The number 1 seed and number 1 in the world had a tough 3rd round opponent in Jarry. Alcaraz took the first set but lost the 2nd set in a tight tiebreak where he did have a set point. He then played an impressive 3rd set but went down a break early in the 4th set before breaking back and taking the set 7-5 to make it through to the 4th round. He was facing the winner of the Zverev and Berrettini. Alcaraz could have a match on his hands after Berrettini showed why he is a previous finalist here. An impressive serving display helped the Italian beat Zverev in straight sets and if he continues to play like he did against Zverev, could be a huge dark horse in this years championships. The number 6th seed, Rune, had a huge scare in his 3rd round encounter against 31st seed, Davidovich Fokina as he found himself 2 sets to 1 down. Rune eventually took the match in a 5th set, super tiebreak 10-8. Lastly 5th seed, Tsitsipas finally had a straight forward match as he beat Djere in straight sets to book a meeting against Eubanks on Monday. Dimitrov was playing some great tennis as he was up 2 sets to love against Tiafoe before rain suspended play.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and ‘Sinner’s Injuries’ remain in the lead on 144 points. Their lead has extended to 7 points over ‘Calf Cramps’ who now sit alone in 2nd spot. ‘Fantasy Alive’ sit in 3rd place with ‘Body Shot’ having a great day to move up into 4th position. ‘Pumpkin Picks’ moved up 15 places and into 5th place.
The wooden spoon has a new holder as the eliminated ‘Kiss my Ace’ now sits in last position and can’t get anymore points to move up.
