Day 3 – US Open

Day 3 was the start of round 2. After round 1 we all expected some upsets and day 3 brought more upsets. Jabeur, Rogers and Kudermetova all continued their good form with straight set wins. The first big upset of the day was the 3rd seeded Greek, Sakkari, losing to unseeded Wang in 3 tight sets. A great win from the 21 year old Chinese lady while Sakkari’s poor grand slam form continues to the disappoint of her fans. 29th seeded American, Riske needed all the home support as she clawed her way past unseeded Osorio Serrano in 3 tight sets. Riske winning 10-5 in the super tiebreak. 20th seed, Madison Keys managed to find a way to beat unseeded Italian Giorgi. Giorgi led the American 5-2 in the 3rd and final set. Keys fighting her way back to 5-5 which turned into a super tiebreak at 6-6. Keys played the much better tiebreak and took it 10-6 to knock out Giorgi. Snigur couldn’t repeat her form from 2 days ago against Halep as she lost in straight sets to Canadian Marino. 12th seeded American, Gauff continued to please her home crowd as she beat Ruse in straight sets. Garcia continued her good form as she booked her spot in the 3rd round with a straight sets win. Tomljanovic needed 3 sets to beat Rodina and book her spot in the 3rd round. Then came 4 big upsets to end day 3. Krunic knocked out 23rd seed, Krejcikova in 3 sets. Serena Williams continued her run at this years US Open with a 3 set win over 2nd in the world, Kontaveit. 14th seed and last years finalist, Fernandez, was another seed to fall on day 3 as she lost to Samsonova. The last match playing from day 3 was between 15th seed, Haddad Maia and Canadian and former champion Andreescu. Andreescu finding some good form against the Brazilian. Andreescu knocking out the 15th seed in straight sets with some really good tennis. She will play the in form lady and 17th seed, Garcia in the next round.

Carreno Busta, De Minaur and Murray all needed 4 sets to beat their respective opponents and book their spot in the 3rd round. Moutet knocked out 21st seed van de Zandschulp in 4 sets and this was the 1st upset in the mens draw for the day. Berrettini beat Grenier in 4 sets. The Italian was pushed all the way by the unseeded Frenchman. Ruud, Kyrgios, Khachanov and Wolf all won their matches in 4 sets. A straight set win was hard to find on day 3. Davidovich Fokina needed all 5 sets to beat Fucsovics while Paul needed all 5 sets again to beat unseeded American Korda. Isner had to give a walkover to 28th seed Rune much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Draper is starting to show some form. The young Brit beating 6th seeded Canadian Auger-Aliassime in straight sets. A great win from Draper! The last mens match on was between number 1 in the world Medvedev and Rinderknech. Medvedev making pretty easy work of the Frenchman as he won in straight sets.

Once again day 3 saw some casualties fall for some teams. The picks lost on day 3 were: Isner (7 picks), Korda (1 pick), Auger-Aliassime (9 picks), van de Zandschulp (1 pick), Bublik (1 pick), Kontaveit (13 picks), Krejcikova (4 picks), Fernandez (3 picks), Giorgi (3 picks), Sakkari (3 picks), Haddad Maia (3 picks).

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and we have 3rd new leader in just as many days. ‘Drop Shots’ move up 2 spots to lead the fantasy league. 5 points behind sits the leader on day 1, ‘My Dream Team’. 3rd place is yesterdays leader ‘Ace Ron’. There is then a 3 way tie for 4th place between ‘Vax Needed’, ‘Never Nadal Moment’ and ‘Body Shot’. The wooden spoon is now going to ‘Hard Hacks’ as the battle for the wooden spoon heats up.
