French Open – Day 9

Day 9 was finally the day that we saw some big upsets in the mens draw. The day started with the ladies matches. 20th seed, Kasatkina, cruised past 28th seed, Giorgi, in straight sets. Kasatkina just dropped 4 games to book her spot in the quarter-finals. The 2nd ladies match on was between 29th seed, Kudermetova, and 22nd seed, Keys. Keys had an amazing start just dropping 1 game on her way to winning the first set. The 29th seed, wasn’t out of the match though as she fought back to drop just 4 games in the next 2 sets and book her spot in the quarter-finals where she will meet her fellow Russian, Kasatkina. The men’s matches followed and the first mens match on was between 8th seed, Ruud, and 12th seed, Hurkacz. Ruud played a great first 2 sets which saw him take a 2 set to love lead. Hurkacz played himself in as he played a great 3rd set to take the match into a 4th set. Hurkacz however, couldn’t keep that level up and Ruud took the match in 4 sets. The first mens match on Philippe-Chatrier was between 4th seed and favourite to reach the final, Tsitsipas, and 19 year-old Dane, Rune. Rune found himself an early break down but it didn’t last long as he broke back quickly. Rune then broke Tsitsipas and won the first set 7-5. The 4th seed fought back and he managed to make it a tie game at 1 set all. Rune though played the 2 sets of his life as he took the match in 4 and knocked out last years finalist. The bottom half of the draw was starting to really open up. The 11th seed, Pegula was up against Begu in her 4th round encounter. The 11th seed having to come back from a set down to book her spot in the quarter-finals. Back to the mens and the 7th seed, Rublev, was up against 11th seed, Sinner. Sinner had a fast start as he took the first set 6-1. Rublev found some form as he stayed on serve in the 2nd set. Sadly though at the backend of the 2nd set, Sinner started to really struggle with his knee. Rublev took the second set before Sinner retired hurt during the 3rd set. The 1st seed and very much the favourite to take her 2nd Roland Garros title, Swiatek, was up against 19 year old Zheng. Zheng found herself a break down but just like the 19 year old, Rune from earlier, she broke back and took the set into a tiebreak. Zheng found herself 5-3 down in the tiebreak before winning 4 points in a row to take the 1st set against the number 1 in the world. Sadly for Zheng she started to really struggle with what I have read was menstrual cramps which really hampered her for the rest of the match. Swiatek taking the next 2 sets comfortably to book her spot in the quarter-finals. The night match was between, 20th seed Cilic and 2nd seed, Medvedev. The last time the 2 met Cilic led 2 sets to love before Medvedev won in 5 sets. This time round, Cilic, dominated from ball 1 and took the match in a comfortable straight sets. This marked the 2nd big upset of the day in the mens draw and has left the bottom draw very open. Who will make it to the final?

Onto the fantasy league and ‘Forever and a Clay’ is loving top spot as they remain in the lead. Their lead however had been cut to just 5 points over ‘Seize the Clay’ in 2nd. There is then a huge 9 point gap over 3rd placed ‘Never Nadal Moment’. ‘Drop Shots’ sadly dropped 2 places to 4th and ‘Phenomenadal’ dropped another place to sit in 5th. ‘Nuts 2 U’ remains in the wooden spoon position.
