Australian Open – Day 14
Day 14 – The men’s final! Medvedev going for his 2nd grand slam and to make it 2 in a row. Nadal going for number 21 and history. It was always going to be a close one to call.
Medvedev was the one who started off the better and he won the first set by 2 breaks 6-2. An impressive start from the Russian and the crowd was slightly stunned. An early break in the 2nd set for Nadal got them going again. Nadal with that break led 4-1. Medvedev held to love to stop the run of games and the score was 4-2. The Russian then broke reasonably easily and we were back on serve at 4-3. Medvedev didn’t level though as Nadal broke the Russian for the second time and Nadal led 5-3 and was serving for the 2nd set. Nadal’s service game was a long one as he tried to close out the 2nd set. Break points, set points were plenty. Eventually it was Medvedev who won the game and we were back on serve. A quick hold and we were now level at 5-5. Another long service game but this time it was Nadal who came out on top to lead 6-5. A tight moment at 30-30 for Medvedev but he came through and it was tiebreak time in the 2nd set. Nadal got the early mini break but it was snuffed out and at the change of ends it was 3-3. Nadal then got another mini break and led 5-3. Medvedev used his class though as he won 4 straight points and won the second set and was a set away from his second grand slam title.
A 15min service game got us under way in the 3rd set with Medvedev just about managing to hold onto his serve. Nadal then had a deuce service game which he got through and we were level 1-1. 3 service holds later and we were 3-2 Medvedev. Nadal was then 0-40 on serve and somehow managed to just hold on and somehow we were 3-3, and then 4-4. Then really out of nowhere Nadal broke and led 5-4 and had another chance to serve out a set and this time he held to love and we were going to 4 sets. Medvedev started in the right fashion with and easy hold while Nadal once again just about held onto his serve. Medvedev was then broken in the 3rd game and the momentum was certainly changing but then Nadal couldn’t consolidate and we were 2-2. An incredibly long service game from Medvedev which he couldn’t hold onto and he was once again down a break at 3-2 and then 4-2. 4 holds of serve and we were going the distance in this final. The final set began with 4 holds of serve and then the first break of serve went to the Spaniard who now led for the first time really in the entire match. Nadal then had to really fight in his next service game which on for over 10min but he held on and led 4-2 final set. 3 reasonably quick holds and it was 5-4 Nadal to serve for the championship. Nadal led 30-0 but the nerves got to him as Medvedev was let back into the game and he took advantage and we were level again at 5-5 final set. But like any good champion, Nadal just went straight back to work on the Medvedev serve and it paid off because he had the break again and would have another chance to serve the championship out. He did it this time to love and we have our first male to reach 21 grand slams – congrats Rafa.
