Australian Open – Quarter finals (1)
The first half of the quarter finals is complete. We expect close matches as we enter the quarter final stages and day 9 didn’t disappoint. Osaka kicked us off and breezed past unseeded Hseih. Dimitrov then played qualifier Karatsev. Karatsev managed to beat an injured Dimitrov to progress to his first semi-final. He is the first man in the open era to reach the semi finals on his grand debut. It’s going to be a big ask to beat the number 1 in the world but you just never know. Halep played Williams in the first night session match and the match did not disappoint. The tennis from the two ladies was spectacular. Williams managed to beat Halep in straight sets. The last match of the night was the number 1 seed ,Djokovic, taking on Zverev. Zverev had beaten him twice before and started strong, taking the first set in a tiebreak. Djokovic hit back immediately to make it 1 set a piece. Zverev then went up an early break before losing 4 games in a row to lose the third set 6-4. Djokovic then once again came back from a 3-0 deficit in the 4th set. The 4th set went into a tiebreak which Djokovic won. A great match to watch!
We have new leaders for the first time since Day 2. “TJ Squared” take the lead by 3 points now. Can “Guys and Dolls” hit back tomorrow or will “TJ Squared” take control. You also can’t rule out “Team Q”. It’s a three team fight for the two prizes. This is just what we wanted, a close fight. Sadly “Forehand winners” become the first team to lose all 6 players and therefore will not be scoring any more points. Here is the leaderboard after Day 9.
What will the rest of the quarter finals hold tomorrow. All the men playing tomorrow have been picked by at least one person and 3 of the ladies have been picked. Tomorrow will be a happy day for some and could be a disastrous day for others. Make some noise for your picks!!!!! Bring on Day 10!
