Wimbledon Championship – Day 3
Day 3 of the 2022 Wimbledon Championships and more good tennis on show. In the men’s draw we saw more 5 set matches and some more upsets. Unseeded Belgium, David Goffin, cruised past 31st seed, Baez, in straight sets. Djokovic made light work on Australian Kokkinakis who was playing the 2nd round at Wimbledon for the 1st time. Bublik beat Lajovic and Paul knocked out Mannarino in straight sets. 5th seed, Alcaraz had an easier time than his first round as he beat Griekspoor in straight sets. The 2 Americans, Johnson and Tiafoe both beat their respective opponents in straight sets. Isner at the end of the day carried on the good day for American’s as he beat home hero, Murray in 4 tight sets. The number 3 seed and French Open runner-up, Ruud, was knocked out by unseeded Frenchman, Humbert, in 4 sets. The other upset of the day was 15th seed, Opelka, who lost to Van Rijthoven, in 4 sets. Norrie came through a tight 5 setter against Munar while Basilashvilli battled past Halys in 4 sets. Vesely beat Davidovich Fokina in a 5th set super tiebreak. The Spaniard receiving a point penalty on match point down to get knocked out of Wimbledon.
On the ladies side, the big upset of the day was the 2nd seed, Kontaveit, losing in straight sets to German, Niemeier, in straight sets. Unseeded, Maria, defeated 26th seed Cirstea in 3 sets. Ostapenko, Kerber, Sakkari and Jabeur all won their respective 2nd round matches in straight sets. Garcia spoilt the British party as she knocked out home favourite and 10th seed, Raducanu in straight sets. Riske lost just 1 game after dropping the first set to Chwalinska to book her spot in the 3rd round.
Onto the fantasy leaderboard and it’s ‘Maiden Voyage’ who has yet to lose a player who has moved into 1st position on 89 points. ‘This Time Baby’ sits in 2nd just 4 points off the lead. ‘Grass Act’ remains in the top 5 and moves up into 3rd position. ‘Boris the Grand Slammer’ sits in 4th position with ‘Magic Team’ sitting in 5th. There is a tie for the wooden spoon between ‘Obies’ and ‘2nd Choice’.
