Australian Open – Day 6

Day 6 and the beginning of round 3 which means we are coming to the end of when substitutes are allowed to be played. From round 4 onwards, no more substitutes are allowed which means tomorrow is the last day for subs to be played.

We start with the ladies today and they were a lot more exciting than day 5 with a few upsets and some great matches on day 6. 18th seed, Vekic, was up against 12th seed, Shnaider in the 3rd round and on paper it looked like a close encounter and well it did not disappoint. The match went the distance with Vekic taking the match, 7-6(4); 6-7(3); 7-5. What a match by both ladies. 11th seed, Badosa was up against 17th seed, Kostyuk and they too went the distance. The Spaniard prevailing 6-4; 4-6; 6-3. What a match. 20 people have Badosa while just 2 had Kostyuk so the majority won this time round. 14th seed, Andreeva had to battle again as she beat 23rd seed, Frech in a 3 set encounter. The set scores weren’t close but still a great match from both players. Andreeva winning 6-2; 1-6; 6-2 and made sure she kept the 18 teams who have picked her happy. The big upset of the day was the last ladies match of the day. Danilovic beat 7th seed, Pegula 7-6(3); 6-1. Fun fact, no one picked Danilovic and she is the top scoring lady with 26 points. Pavlyuchenkova, Sabalenka, Bencic and Gauff all safely booked their spots in the 4th round with comfortable straight set wins.

Onto the mens draw and well it was just as close as the ladies. Davidovich Fokina has done something which no man has done in 20 years. The Spaniard has won back-to-back matches from 2 sets to love down. This time round he beat the young Czech, Mensik much to the disappointment of 3 teams. What makes the comeback even better…Mensik was 30-0 up and serving for the match in 3rd set and he was match point up in the 3rd set tiebreak as well. Just crazy fight from the Spaniard. 15th seed Draper was the other man involved in a crazy match. The Brit made it 3 five-set wins out of 3 matches at this years AO. He beat Australian Vukic, 6-4; 2-6; 5-7; 7-6(5); 7-6(10-8).

Paul, Alcaraz, Zverev, Humbert, Djokovic and Lehecka all won comfortably and move into the 4th round at this years AO.

Onto the leaderboard and we have an outright leader. ‘Kick My Ace’ leads the way but their lead is just 1 point as ‘Heksie’s Pot Luck’ remains in the fight in 2nd place. ‘Strung Out’ is in 3rd to make it 2 out of the top 3 teams belonging to Nicky. ‘(B)racquet Challange’ moves another spot down and now sits in 4th. ‘Ally Cats’ and ‘Miss Hits’ sit in a joint 5th and are currently sharing the last 2 prizes. ‘Ynot’ and ‘Coco Motion’ are fighting away for the 41st spot while ‘Calf Cramps’, ‘The Village People’ and ‘Royal Gamers’ are all fighting for the 69th position prize.

Bring on Day 7!
