Day 5 – Australian Open

Day 5 saw the end of round 2 so we now know everyone who will be competing in round 3. This will be a short post as Day 6 post will be longer and come out tomorrow morning hopefully. This post for clarification does not include any matches played today on the 17th of January.

Day 5 on the mens side saw majority of seeds go through actually. 17th seed, Tiafoe however was one of the seeds that fell on day 5 after losing to unseeded Marozsan in 5 sets. Losing the deciding set 6-1. After the amazing win in round 1 for Fonseca, he could not back it up as Sonego beat the young Brazilian in a 5 set battle. 18th seed, Hurkacz was another seed to fall on day 5 as he lost in straight sets to Kecmanovic. Berrettini lost to 13th seed, Rune in 4 sets. The reason I mention this is because the Italian was picked by an amazing 22 teams so a big loss in the fantasy league. The last match of the day which finished well past 2am saw 5th seed, Medvedev fall to next gen and 19 year old, Tien in a super tiebreak in the 5th set. An amazing match from both players. Medvedev so nearly coming back from 2 sets down and match point down but couldn’t pull off the ultimate comeback in the end. Sinner, Fritz, De Minaur, Musetti, Cerundolo, Monfils and Khachanov all comfortably booked their spots in the 3rd round.

On the ladies side…only the 1 seed fell on day 5 and that was 22nd seed, Boulter who lost to Kudermetova in 3 sets. Otherwise Paolini, Collins, Keys, Svitolina, Haddad Maia, Rybakina, Putintseva, Swiatek, Navarro, Raducanu, Jabeur, Kasatkina and Yastremska all booked their spots in the 3rd round.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and we have a tie for the top spot between ‘Heksie’s Pot Luck’ and ‘Strung Out’. The latter moving up an impressive 16 spots to be at the top. 3rd place sits our previous leader ‘(B)racquet Challenge’ just 2 points behind the leaders. 4th place a further 1 point back sits ‘Kick My Ace’. ‘Dodgy Dingos’ move up 10 spots and into 5th while ‘Buena Suerta’ also move up 10 spots and into 6th.

3 way battle continues for the 41st position spot prize and ‘Love Actually’ moved down 16 spots and into the 69th position and could be up for that spot prize.
