Wimbledon Championships – Day 7
Day 7 was a day finally with no rain and it was a great day for tennis fans. So many matches could have gone differently and that is why we love this sport.
On the men’s side we had the match between Tiafoe and Dimitrov which needed to be completed. Dimitrov looked very impressive yesterday and did not let the day break stop his good form as he did not take long to finish Tiafoe off. The first match on centre court was a cracker between 7th seed, Rublev, and 23rd seed Bublik. Rublev looked in trouble in the first set but he managed to fend off some break points and then at 6-5 and 30-30, Bublik served 2 double faults to hand Rublev the opening set and the 7th seed used this momentum to take the 2nd set as well to have a 2 set to love lead. Unfortunately for Rublev he did not put Bublik away which allowed the Kazak to take the 3rd set and then the 4th set both in tiebreaks. Rublev regained focus in 5th set and took it 6-4 to book his spot in the quarter-finals where he will face the winner of Djokovic and Hurkacz which still needs to be completed. Djokovic leads that match 2 sets to love currently after taking both sets in tiebreaks.
Unseeded Safiullin continued his impressive form at this years championships with a 4 set win over 26th seed Shapovalov. His next opponent is Sinner in the quarter-finals after the Italian defeated Galan in straight sets. That could be an interesting quarter-final as Safiullin seems to be a dark horse at this years championships.
Andreeva the 16 year old and 22nd seed Potapova were not able to play on day 6 so they played on day 7 and Andreeva who came through qualifying knocked out another seed after defeating Potapova in straights sets. Andreeva is playing today and is currently beating the in form Keys. This 16 year old could be a future star for sure.
The first ladies 4th round match was between 2 Czech players, Vondrousova and 32nd seed Bouzkova. Bouzkova started off the better of the 2 and took the first set 6-2 but it was Vondrousova who took the next 2 sets to book her spot in this years quarter-final. Vondrousova like Safiulllin is looking like a dark horse in the ladies draw. The 4th seed, Pegula, was up against unseeded Ukrainian, Tsurenko. The 4th seed continued her run of form with an impressive 6-1; 6-3 win to book her quarter-final spot where she will face Vondrousova. The 2 ladies matches of day 7 were played at the same time. On centre court we had the match between number 1 in the world Swiatek and number 14 seed, Bencic. Swiatek after a tight first set brought up some set points on the Bencic serve at 5-4 but Bencic impressively held her nerve to hold serve and the set went into a tiebreak. And…what!A!Tiebreak! Bencic raced ahead and had a 6-1 lead before taking the tiebreak 7-4 to lead the number 1 in the world by a set. Swiatek broke early in the 2nd set to lead 3-1 but then lost her lead just as quickly and it was 3-3. Then at 6-5 Bencic leading, Swiatek had a hiccup on serve and was 2 match points down at 15-40 but 2 very impressive points later it was deuce and then we headed into another tiebreak. This time round it was Swiatek who played the almost perfect tiebreak and we headed into a 3rd set. Swiatek will be relieved to have taken that 3rd set and continue her run at this years championships. Bencic will be disappointed but an impressive run at this years championships considering she was coming back from an injury is impressive. The other ladies match which I was talking about earlier was between 2 mothers. Svitolina and Azarenka were against each other for a spot in the quarterfinals. Azarenka the 19th seed, started off the better of the 2 players and went up 6-2; 2-0 but Svitolina with the help of the crowd found her rhythm and she broke back and took the 2nd set 6-4 which meant we were heading into a 3rd set. Svitolina was the better player for the majority of the set but Azarenka did extremely well to hang in and take the set into a super tiebreak. Azarenka took the lead but Svitolina fought back to make it 7-7. An amazing point at 9-9 from Svitolina meant it was match point on her serve and an ace later it was the unseeded Ukrainian who took the match and booked her spot in the quarter-finals where her opponent does not get any easier as it is Swiatek.
Onto the fantasy leaderboard and ‘Sinner’s Injuries’ are making a statement at the top as they extend their lead to 16 points. ‘Fantasy Alive’ move above ‘Calf Cramps’ to sit in 2nd place. ‘Calf Cramps’ move down into 3rd and are just 1 point clear of 4th placed ‘Pumpkin Picks’. The last prize position is occupied by 2 teams and they are ‘Drop Shots’ and ‘Hawks Hackers’.
