Wimbledon Championships – Day 2

The start of Wimbledon has not gone smoothly for the organisers as another day was rained out and so more matches will have to be caught up. Thankfully it looks like day 3 will be a rain free day.

As it rained out we only saw 6 matches start and finish and then 2 matches were moved from other courts which did not finish the day before. On centre court we saw the return of last years winner, Rybakina and she was up against a tricky opponent in Shelby Rogers. Rogers started off brilliantly while Rybakina started off making many unforced errors and this meant that the defending champion was a set down in her first round match. Rybakina however started the 2nd set off perfectly with a good service hold and a break of serve and she raced from there into a 5-0 lead before taking the set 6-1. The 2nd set went a similar way as Rybakina took it 6-2 to begin her quest on defending her title.

Murray was next on centre court and he was up against fellow Brit Peniston. In front of Roger Federer who was sitting in the royal box, the former Wimbledon champion put on a fantastic performance as he dispatched of Peniston in straight sets 6-3; 6-0; 6-1.

The last match which was scheduled for centre court was the number 2 seed, Sabalenka against Upvardy. The 2nd seed and number 2 in the world is aiming once again to try and become the world number 1 after Wimbledon if things fall her way. She began her campaign brilliantly as she lost just the 4 games on her way to the 2nd round.

Dan Evans was 2 sets to love down on day 1 before the rain hit and his match was moved onto centre court to be finished. The 27th seeded Brit managed to somehow take the 3rd set in a tiebreak but his excitement did not last long as Halys finished him off in the 4th set to book his place in the 2nd round.

Court 1 started with the world number 1 Alcaraz against 36 year old Frenchman Chardy. Chardy started off struggling to find his rhythm on serve and this really cost him as the first 2 sets were down in less than an hour 6-0; 6-2. The 3rd set was more of what we expected and it was a good battle as Alcaraz had to fend off some break points during the set. Unfortunately for Chardy he was broken at 5-5 and Alcaraz served it out to love to book his spot in the 2nd round.

The runner-up last year, Ons Jabeur, was next on against Frech. Jabeur has not had her best run of form in the lead up tournaments to Wimbledon but this did not affect her as she played a really impressive match to take it 6-3; 6-3 and book her spot in the 2nd round.

12th seeded and highest seeded Brit, Cam Norrie was the last match scheduled for court 1 and he was up against Machac. The first 2 sets were tightly contested with Norrie taking the first set 6-3 before Machac took the 2nd set 6-4. Norrie however reset after losing the 2nd set and raced away in the 3rd set taking it 6-1 before he took the 4th set 6-4 to book his spot in the 2nd round of Wimbledon.

The match that was moved onto court 1 was between 29th seed, Etcheverry and Zapata Miralles. Zapata Miralles was leading the Argentine 2 sets to love and 3-1 in the 3rd set but somehow the 29th seed, Etcheverry, found a way to win the 3rd set and then the 4th and then the 5th to book his spot in the 2nd round. An impressive win from the 29 seed.

Picks which lost on day 2:
Men: Evans
Ladies: Rogers

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and our leaders from yesterday ‘Green Beans’ have dropped to 12th spot after day 2. We have a tie for the lead in fact with ‘Wooden Spoon Hacker’ and ‘SW Ronnie’ sitting in the lead, both on 44 points. We then have a 4 way tie for 3rd spot between ‘Obies’, ‘Fantasy Alive’, ‘Kervin’s Team’ and ‘Simply Smashing’. They are all just 1 point behind the 2 leaders. Super tight at the top.
The wooden spoon is now being won by ‘Another Calf Cramp’ who are sitting in 74th spot on 11 points.
