Australian Open – Day 2

Day 2 of the Australian Open was a much more exciting day than day 1 due to the fact that matches were all played and no rain delays occurred. On the ladies side, there were a few upsets in terms of the fantasy league and then also some big wins for players which have moved a few teams up the leaderboard.

Tomljanovic came through a tough 3 set match against Krueger. The reason I bring this match up is because both ladies were picked in the fantasy league so big win for some teams while others lost their 4th lady. Bronzetti produced the biggest upset so far as she knocked out 21st seed, Azarenka, in straight sets causing a few teams to require a substitute player. Dart who replaced Vondrousova at the very last minute as a lucky loser, managed to come through her match and book a spot in the 2nd round after not qualifying outright. A big performance from the British star. Those teams who had Vondrousova, she pulled out last minute so the next ranked lady has replaced her in your teams. That lady is Jabeur. Bencic produced the biggest upset as she knocked out 16th seed, Ostapenko much to the disappointment of many teams. Very well played from the Swiss star who is coming back from having her first child. Niemeier bagged the most points so far by a lady as she got a 6-0; 6-1 win meaning she scored a whopping 10 points and only 1 team has her. Mertens and Osaka both came through tough 3 set matches in their opening rounds much to the relief of many teams. Then straight set wins for Samsonova, Shnaider, Gauff, Frech, Svitolina, Swiatek, Potapova, Pegula, Muchova and Collins allowing them to book their spots in the 2nd round.

Onto the mens draw and Tiafoe was first up and the 17th seed had to battle his way to the 2nd round as Rinderknech fought back from 2 sets down to level the match at 2 sets all. Tiafoe managed to regain control and took the final set 6-3 to book his spot in the 2nd round. The first seed to fall on day 2 in the mens draw was 23rd seed, Tabilo who lost in 4 sets to Carballes Baena. Then 11th seed, Tsitispas, much to the disappointment of 12 teams who had picked him. The Greek fell in 4 sets to American youngster, Michelsen. Marozsan knocked out Seyboth Wild in what was a ridiculous match. The Hungarian took the match 6-3; 6-7(5); 7-5; 5-7; 7-5. 15th seed, Draper, survived a scare. He had to come back from 2 sets to 1 down to beat Argentine, Navone, in 5 sets and book his spot in the 2nd round. Cazaux knocked out yet another seed as 28th seed, Baez, fell in 5 sets. Passaro beat 10th seed, Dimitrov. However the Bulgarian sadly had to retire much to the disappointment of 10 teams who had him as their sub. 12th seed, Paul was another who just managed to survive. He beat O’Connell in 5 sets, taking the final set 7-5 much to the relief of 16 teams. Then Mensik, Borges, Duckworth, Sinner, Thompson, Kokkinakis, Korda, Auger-Aliassime, Alcaraz, Djokovic and Bonzi all booked their spots in the 2nd round in either 3 or 4 sets.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and we have a new leader…’Miss Hits’ has moved up 17 spots and leads the way on day 2 just 1 point ahead of ‘Fraud Watch’ who sits in 2nd. ‘Tipsy 1’ and ‘SERVED’ sit in a joint 3rd with ‘Heksie’s Pot Luck’, ‘Miny Moe’ and ‘Pam the Slam’ all sitting in a joint 5th. In the middle of the leaderboard there are 6 teams in the joint 41st spot so the battle is on for the spot prize and at the bottom of the leaderboard ‘Coco Motion’ sits in the 2nd spot prize position and ‘Manchester United’ sits in the wooden spoon position.
