US Open – Men’s Final and Wrap Up

Day 14 and the last day of grand slam tennis for 2024. Can you believe it?

The men’s final was between Sinner(1) and Fritz(12). Both players had been on court for similar amounts of time and both players had been playing at a super high level throughout the tournament. This match was not different and even though it was Fritz’s first grand slam final, he turned up and produced a show. Unfortunately for the home support and the American, it was not enough as Sinner was just too good on the day taking the match 6-3; 6-4; 7-5 and lifting his 2nd grand slam title in the year and his 2nd grand slam title overall. Fritz had his opportunity in the 3rd set as he led by a break at 5-3 and had a chance to serve it out at 5-4 however he was unable to do so. The Italian has increased his lead in the rankings by a monumental amount after an exceptional year of tennis and amazingly due to points lost, Zverev is now the number 2 in the world.

Now we move onto the fantasy league and our prize winners:

In 1st Place and winning his 3rd prize of the year is ‘Sinner’s Physio‘. They did not have the best start to the tournament but as the tournament went on they became stronger and stronger as they had 7/8 players scoring points for a long period of this years US Open. They made their move to the top late on and after that no one could stop them. They finish with a huge lead of 33 points…exceptional. The big picks for them was obviously having both the winners but the pick that won it for them was probably Muchova as they were 1 of 3 teams to pick her and she scored 43 points for the tournament. They also won without having to use a substitute which is very impressive indeed. They will be taking home R1200 for their win.

Onto 2nd Spot which had been tightly contested for the majority of the tournament. In the end it was ‘Uncle Sam’s Army‘ who finished the race in 2nd spot. They were in the top 5 for the majority of the tournament and while others fluctuated they remained a constant. They never really challenged for 2nd spot but right at the death they had both the men’s finalist and that moved them up 2 spots on the very last day and allowed them to take 2nd. They will be taking home R500 for their hard earned 2nd spot.

3rd Spot was won by ‘Lord of the Strings‘ who was another team which remained consistently in the top 5 and the majority of the time was in the top 3. There were moments when they were fighting for top spot but unfortunately they had to settle for 3rd overall. A good performance from them and for their efforts they will be taking home R350.

4th spot was won by ‘Fraud Watch’ who was the only prize winner to not pick both eventual winners. What saved them from dropping out of the prizes was once again ‘Muchova’. They also had Fritz come in as a substitute which allowed them to score points all the way up to the final. By not picking Sinner they did drop down to 4th on the last day after being 2nd on day 13 and were just 1 point ahead of 5th place. They will be taking home R250.

5th Spot will be very happy to have come 5th as they occupied 6th spot for a large portion of the tournament and broke into the top 5 right at the death on day 14. However they will be gutted to have missed out on 4th by just a singular point. Close, close margins. They will be taking home R150 for their 5th place.

6th Place and also moving up a spot on the very last day was ‘Winning Wino‘. They were 1 point away from 5th which makes them just 2 points away from 4th. The margins just can’t get any tighter. They will be pleased however to go from wooden spoon winner in Wimbledon to winner of R100 in the US Open.

The last prize winner and getting the entry money back was ‘Fantasy Alive‘. Unfortunately for them they only had Sinner in the men’s final while 5th and 6th placed finishes both had Fritz and Sinner. This meant they dropped down to 7th but will be very pleased to have hung onto a prize position. They take home the R50 prize.

Just a reminder that our Wooden Spoon Winner was ‘Victorious Secret’. They managed just 85 points and finished 32 points away from 2nd last spot. They also were the 1st team to enter the fantasy league and the only team not to reach the 100 point mark.

Congratulations to the 27 teams who picked both Sinner and Sabalenka the eventual winners of the US Open. Both were very popular choices with Sinner being the most picked male with 44 picks and Sabalenka receiving the most picks overall with 49 picks. My fantasy league entrants were not fooled at this years US Open and picked the winners before the tournament even began.

The full leaderboard is below:
Blue: Means the team picked both the men’s and ladies winners (Sinner and Sabalenka)
Yellow: Means the team picked either the men’s or ladies winner.
Red: The team did not have any of the eventual winners.
