Wimbledon – Men’s Final and Wrap
Day 14 and the last day of Wimbledon 2024 is done and dusted. Day 14 is the day of the men’s final and it was a repeat of the 2023 Wimbledon final so on paper we were in for a treat. Alcaraz was playing to win his 4th grand slam title and was playing to keep his unbeaten record in grand slam finals. Djokovic was playing in his 10th Wimbledon final and was vying for his 25th grand slam title. There was a lot on the line for both players. Alcaraz had had the tougher draw of the 2 players but that meant nothing as we headed into the final.
In the 2023 final it took Alcaraz 31min to win his first game of the final. The first game of the match was a long one and it was Alcaraz who broke immediately to start this final so he did not have to wait 31min this time round. Alcaraz held and it was a good start for the Spaniard who led 2-0. Djokovic held to put himself on the board but in his 3rd service game was broken again and was a double break down and trailing by 5-1. It was the reverse of 2023. Djokovic held to force Alcaraz to serve it out and well that is exactly what the 3rd seed, and defending champion did to take the 1st set comfortably 6-2. Once again Alcaraz broke in the opening game of the set and this was getting one sided quickly. Alcaraz looked to have Djokovic covered in every aspect and the 2nd set was once again pretty one sided. Alcaraz managing to break again to lead 5-2 and then hold to take the 2nd set 6-2 just as he did in the 1st. The 3rd set was always going to be closer than the 1st two sets but Djokovic just did not seem to have any answers to the brilliance of Alcaraz. For the first time in the match, Djokovic managed to hold onto his first service game and wasn’t a break down early. Djokovic was the server under pressure however it was the Serb who nearly broke in the 6th game. Alcaraz having to come up with some brilliance to make sure it stayed level at 3-3. Then at 4-4, Alcaraz made his move and managed to conjure up a triple break point at 0-40 and took the 2nd one and was now a game away from defending his title and finishing the Roland Garros and Wimbledon double. It looked all so good for Alcaraz as he brought up triple match point at 40-0 and it looked all but done…but then the nerves came and it quickly became deuce and then a Djokovic break point and then the first break Djokovic got in the match. It was somehow 5-5. Djokovic then held comfortably and all of a sudden the match had a different look to it. Alcaraz did well to gather his thoughts at the changeover and to hold serve to love to send the set into a tiebreak. Alcaraz throughout the whole match looked stronger so before the tiebreak it looked like Alcaraz’s one to lose however after the nerves in the 10th game, anything could happen. Alcaraz got the initial mini break and led 3-1 before he was pegged back to 3-3. Some brilliance from Alcaraz allowed him to lead 4-3 before an unforced error from Djokovic handed the mini break back to the Spaniard. Alcaraz led 5-4 and had to serves and this was enough to take the match and defend his title.
Alcaraz became the youngest man to successfully defend the Wimbledon Singles title since Boris Becker did it in 1986. He also became the youngest man to win Roland Garros and Wimbledon in the same year during the open era. He is the 2nd player after Federer to go 4-0 in his first 4 grand slam finals. What a champion we are witnessing in front of our eyes…Carlos Alcaraz!!
During this years Wimbledon there were 37 matches that went the full 5 sets which is the most 5 set matches at a single grand slam in the open era and this years Wimbledon was the 1st men’s grand slam in the open era that did not have a single bagel throughout the entire tournament.
Now onto the fantasy league leaderboard…
In 1st place is ‘Hit and Run‘. They have snatched it away from our joint leaders on the last day of the tournament can you believe. Hit and Run had both Djokovic and Alcaraz heading into the final and ended with the best team of males. An impressive performance from them and they can take home the full prize of R1200.
In a joint 2nd place are the 2 teams who seemed to be joined by the hip throughout the last week of Wimbledon, ‘Left is Best‘ and ‘Super Smash’. They ended just 4 points behind the winner and can be happy with their performance throughout the tournament. They will be taking home (R600 + R400)/2. Therefore they each will receive R500 for their efforts.
In 4th place is ‘Sinner’s Injuries‘ who were the other team at the top who had both Djokovic and Alcaraz on the last day of Wimbledon which allowed them to move up a spot and end in 4th place. They managed to back up their 5th place at Roland Garros with a 4th place at Wimbledon. Some say they have achieved the Roland Garros and Wimbledon double. They will be taking home R300 for their efforts.
In 5th place is ‘The Racquets‘. They were the only team to pick Krejcikova and also picked Alcaraz and so were the only team to be in blue this time round as they picked both the ladies and men’s champion. A really impressive feat considering they were the only 1 out of 83 teams entered. They have won themselves R200.
The last prize position was 6th place and this went to ‘Miny Moe‘ who finished just 1 point ahead of 7th place. Miny Moe looked in the fight for the win at some points in this years Wimbledon fantasy league but dropped back at the backend of the competition. They managed to hang on and win the R100 for coming in 6th. Congratulations.
Lets not forget about our wooden spoon winner…’Kick My Ace’ who was the 1st team eliminated and unfortunately was dropped into last place shortly afterwards.
Congratulations to everyone who entered. 44 teams picked Alcaraz and so more than half the teams are in yellow so a big performance from everyone. 1 more grand slam to go…start looking out for who you want to pick for the US Open.
The full leaderboard is below:
Blue: Means the team picked both the men’s and ladies winners (Alcaraz and Krejcikova)
