Wimbledon – Men’s Semi-Finals

Day 12 and men’s semi-final day is done and dusted. Not as much drama as day 11 with the ladies semi-finals but the tennis was still top quality.

The first match was between Medvedev, the 5th seed who had come through the number 1 in the world Sinner in the previous match, and Alcaraz our Wimbledon defending champion. Medvedev started off in the same form which got him to this semi-final and managed to get the early break to lead 3-1 in the opening set. He then held to make it 4-1 before the score quickly became 5-2 to Medvedev. Alcaraz did his job as he managed to hold to make it 5-3 and to force the 5th seed to serve the opening set out. Medvedev played a very poor game and just like that we were back on serve. The set then ended up going to a tiebreak and what a tiebreak from Medvedev. The 5th seed managed to take it comfortably 7-1 and was a set up against the defending champion. The 2nd set started the same as the 1st set but this time it was Alcaraz who managed to break early and lead 4-1. This break lasted the entire set and it was the Spaniard who took the set 6-3 and we were level once again in the opening semi-final. Alcaraz just as in the 2nd set broke the Medvedev serve in his 2nd service game in the 3rd set. This break once again lasted the entire set and the Spaniard was a set away from making a consecutive Wimbledon final and grand slam final after his recent Roland Garros title. The 4th set started with 2 break of serve, 1 from each player. The next break of serve came in the 7th game where Alcaraz once again found a way to break the Medvedev serve. This was enough for the 3rd seed and defending champion to book his spot in the Wimbledon final on Sunday.

The 2nd match of the day was between 2nd seed, Djokovic and 25th seed, Musetti. Both players started alright and Musetti held his first 2 service games to settle the nerves however his 3rd service game was problematic as he was broken to trail 4-2. Djokovic then led 5-2 before Musetti held serve to force Djokovic to serve the opening set out which the great champion could not and just as in the first semi-final of the day from 5-2 the score quickly became 5-4. Unfortunately for Musetti he was broken comfortably and the 1st set was gone just like that. However this did not faze the Italian as he broke in the opening game of the 2nd set and managed to hold his service game to lead 2-0. Once again though for the 25th seed, he had a very poor service game and was broken to love and the score was level again at 3-3. The rest of the set went on serve and so a tiebreak was needed to decide the winner of the 2nd set. Musetti had the worst possible start to the tiebreak and was quickly 3-0 down and he was just unable to close the gap and went down 7-2 and now trailed by 2 sets to love and so there was a long road to travel to get into his first grand slam final. The break for Djokovic came in the very first service game of the 3rd set and this was enough to book his spot in yet another grand slam final.

So there you have it, a repeat of the Wimbledon final of last year between Alcaraz and Djokovic on Sunday. What a match they put on for us last year, lets hope it is as close to that as possible this year.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and our leaders are still joined by the hip. ‘Left is Best’ and ‘Super Smash’ remain in the lead but their lead has diminished to just a singular point over ‘Hit and Run’ who have moved into 3rd spot. ‘Sinner’s Injuries’ moved up 5 places and now sits in a joint 4th with ‘Hawks Hackers’ who moved down a spot to 4th. The last prize position, 6th, is occupied by ‘Miny Moe’ at the moment.

More teams were eliminated on day 12 with the loss of Medvedev…Amongst those lost were: ‘Be-Yawn Bored’, ‘Lonely Heart’, ‘Blind Choice’ and ‘Busdrywaz’.
