US Open – Men’s Final and Wrap up

What a year of grand slam tennis! Sabalenka and Djokovic were impressive in a 4 grand slams. Djokovic amazingly made all 4 grand slam finals and won 3 out of the 4 bringing his tally to 24 grand slams which is just crazy. Sabalenka managed to win her first grand slam at the Australian Open and then made the semi-finals in both the French Open and Wimbledon and then made her 2nd grand slam final of the year here at the US Open. An amazing year for our new ladies world number 1. Now the question is, can she hold onto the spot till the end of the year? This year also saw an amazing grand slam win for Vondrousova at Wimbledon as well as a first grand slam for Gauff her at her home grand slam. It was just an amazing year of tennis and it is not over yet with the ladies finals being played in Mexico from the 29th October-5th November and the men’s finals being held from the 12th November to the 19th of November. Don’t forget about the Laver Cup which starts in a weeks time on the 22nd of September which is always a lot of fun to watch.

Now onto the men’s final that was played on Sunday night/Monday morning in South Africa. Medvedev was up against Djokovic which was a rematch from 2 years ago and on that day it was a straight sets win for Medvedev who won his first grand slam. This time round however it did not go the 3rd seeds way and Djokovic got his revenge as the Serb beat Medvedev in straight sets 6-3; 7-6(5); 6-3. The 2nd set was the important set in the match with both players playing unreal. That 2nd set had the feel of that second set we all witnessed between Djokovic and Alcaraz at Wimbledon which was a huge set which Alcaraz won. This time round the 2nd set which lasted 104 minutes which is insane went the way of Djokovic and that sealed the match with Djokovic managing to hold a breaks lead in the third and final set.

Onto the long awaited fantasy leaderboard and I am sure it has been a nervous wait for some of you.

In 1st place is not who you all may think, it is ‘Fine Whines’ who managed to get the 15 points required on day 14 to pip ‘PhenomeNOnadal’ by 1 point and be crowned the US Open champion in the fantasy league. They managed to have both the men’s and ladies winner which helped them climb up the leaderboard late on and eventually take the win on the last day. They will be taking home the R1000 grand prize.

In 2nd place is the very unfortunate ‘PhenomeNOnadal’ who unfortunately missed out on the win by 1 point and after leading for the majority of the 2nd week will be gutted not to take the win. Their downfall was not having any of the eventual winners which cost them the win as they had not accumulated enough points in the days leading up to the finals to hold onto their lead. It would have been a crazy story to have a winner of the fantasy league and that winner not having any of the winners but it was not to be for ‘PhenomeNOnadal’. They did however end up with the best ladies team and well they will be taking home R300 still for their efforts.

In 3rd place is ‘2nd‘ who almost predicted their finishing position with the name of their team. They were probably one of the most consistent teams as they were almost always in the top 5 during the entire US Open. A fantastic effort and in the end they finish just 2 points behind 2nd place. They will be taking home R150 for their 3rd place finish.

In 4th place is ‘Fudgies‘ who were the only other team in top 5 besides our winner who picked both the eventual winners. They loved being 4th throughout the US Open and unfortunately for them were just not able to move any higher. They will be taking home the R100.

Lastly we had a tie for 5th place between ‘Hawks Hackers‘ and ‘Stentastics‘. These 2 teams were just not able to be seperated in the latter half of the 2nd week and ended up joint 5th in the end just 2 points behind 4th place. The prize for 5th was R50 but as it is the last grand slam of the year they will each be taking home R50 for the efforts. Congratulations to you to.

We knew the wooden spoon winner a long time ago but congratulations to Talented Turtles who scored a measly 98 points but the good news is it was worth it because a prize was won!

A shoutout must got to ‘Dropshots’ who missed out on a prize by just 2 points but they did end up with the best males teams which is something to brag about so well done to them!

Well done to everyone in not only the US Open but in all the grand slams this year. It has been loads of fun and the main reason is because of all of you. So thank you for all the support! Here is to another great year of tennis in 2024 but for now it is goodbye as we await next year’s Australian Open where we will be back for more grand slam fantasy league action.

The full leaderboard is below:
Blue: Means the team picked both the men’s and ladies winners (Djokovic and Gauff)
