US Open – Day 13

We have a new ladies singles US Open champion and it is Swiatek the world number 1. The number 1 seed managed to come through a tough opponent in Jabeur ,who will become the new world number 2 after the US Open, in straight sets.

Swiatek came out all guns blazing while Jabeur came out a little passive and a little nervous as her footwork was not up to her high standards. This allowed Swiatek the perfect start as she lead 3-0 before Jabeur managed to hit back out of nowhere really to make it on serve at 3-2. Swiatek kept calm and broke Jabeur to restore her lead and then she managed to win the following 2 games to take the opening set 6-2. The way she was playing it looked like it could be a quick final and the 2nd set began the exact same way as the first set. Swiatek raced to a 3-0 lead and the Jabeur made it 3-2. It continued to go the same as Swiatek once again broke to keep her lead and she made it 4-2. However the similarities stopped there as Jabeur broke in a game which went to deuce and then won her serve which made it 4-4 and level once again. Jabeur was starting to find some rythym and managed to conjure up 2 break points which she sadly couldn’t take. She was given a third break point which she once again made an unforced error on and in the end it was Swiatek who came out of the game and led 5-4. Jabeur was now serving to stay in the final and she impressively managed to hold from 15-30 down. Swiatek then held comfortably to make it 6-5. Jabeur then had to save a championship point at 5-6 but came through the game to force a tiebreak. Swiatek took the first mini break to lead at the change of ends 4-2. Jabeur then won 3 points in a row to make it 5-4 to Jabeur. Swiatek however played the next 3 points well to beat Jabeur and win her 3rd grand slam title at just 21 years of age.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and it’s ‘Drop Shots’ who keep their 4 point lead over ‘My Dream Team’ in 2nd. ‘Eish’ drops back in 3rd place and is now 11 points off the lead. ‘Hit and Run’ make a late move into 4th place and ‘Simply Smashing’ are now sitting in 5th place.

There were 40 teams who picked the eventual winner Swiatek while the losing finalist Jabeur was picked 13 times. The teams in yellow are the teams who picked the ladies winner – Swiatek.
