Wimbledon Championships – Day 7
Day 7 and the first time there have been scheduled matches on what used to be rest day. In the ladies draw we once again so some upsets. Bouzkova knocked out in form Garcia in straight sets. Maria knocked out 12th seed and possible favourite to reach the final, Ostapenko. Ostapenko took the first set and led by a break in the 2nd set. Maria fought back to take the match to a decider. Maria was the first to break and was serving for the match at 5-4 before Ostapenko broke back. Maria kept her cool as she broke Ostapenko and then this time managed to serve it out to book her spot in the quarter-finals. German Niemeier knocked out Brit, Watson, in straight sets. Last ladies match of the day was between 3rd seed, Jabeur, and 24th seed, Mertens. The first set was tightly contested and ended up going to a tiebreak. Jabeur managing to save set points and eventually took it 11 points to 9. She went on to win the 2nd set 6-4 and book her spot in the quarter-finals. With the bottom half of the ladies so open, is this Jabeur’s chance?
In the men’s draw we saw an epic match between 23rd seed, Tiafoe, and unseeded Belgium, Goffin. Tiafoe led the Belgium 2 sets to 1 before Goffin took the next 2 sets to book his place in the quarter-finals. He will face 9th seed and home favourite, Norrie, who knocked out Paul in straight sets. The battle of the youngsters to maybe the surprise of some went to Sinner as he knocked out 5th seed, Alcaraz in 4 sets. The last match of the day was between unseeded but in form, Van Rojthoven against number 1 in the world Djokovic. Djokovic showed his class in the first set before Van Rojthoven proved why he has had success on grass as he made it 1 set all.
