Ladies Final – US Open
Day 13 and the last ladies grand slam final of 2021. 2 surprise finalists and a chance for 1 of them to write their name in the history books. Was it going to be the higher ranked Canadian, Fernandez, or the qualifier who hadn’t dropped a set, Raducanu.
Raducanu was serving first and an important game to settle the nerves. A good hold from the Brit and now onto the Canadian to hold and settle her nerves. The 2nd game was an extremely long game. Fernandez found herself 0-40 down and somehow managed to peg back to deuce. Fernandez managed to save 2 more break points but also let 2 game points go. The 6th break point chance was taken and Raducanu had a dream start as she led 2-0. The 3rd game was also a long one as Fernandez tried to hit back immediately. 3 break points were saved but eventually on the 4th go, Fernandez broke and it was 2-1. From then on there were comfortable holds for both players and the score was 4-4. Raducanu held in that pressure 9th game and led 5-4. All the pressure was on the Canadian as she served to stay in the 1st set. The Canadian went down 15-40 but managed once again to peg her way back to deuce. The Canadian managed to save 1 more set point but the Brit took her 4th chance and led a grand slam final by 1 set to love. 2 holds of serve started us off in the 2nd set. Fernandez having another tough service game where she came back from a 0-40 deficit. She used that momentum and broke Raducanu and she led the 2nd set 2-1. Sadly for her though she was broken back immediately and a hold of serve for Raducanu and now Raducanu led 3-2. Another poor game on serve for the Canadian and once again she was broken. Raducanu backed up the break and led 5-2 and was 1 game away from making history. Once again Fernandez had a tough service game where she saved to championship points. Importantly she forced the qualifier to serve out the championship match. Raducanu went down 30-40 in her service game. That point to go down 30-40, Raducanu slid and grazed her knee. It was bleeding which meant the doctor had to come out and patch it up. This required a medical timeout which was not received well by Fernandez. An unforced error from Fernandez and the break point was saved. An unforced error by the Brit and once again Fernandez had a break point. Raducanu then played a good point which was finished off with a smash and it was deuce. Another good point was played and it was championship point for the British player. An Ace! What a way to finish off the match. An amazing tournament from both players and lets hope they can both continue performing at this level in the years to come.
With only 1 team having lady left, it means that the leaderboard hasn’t changed a huge amount. Congratulations to ‘Highly Strung’ who picked Raducanu. This means that ‘Highly Strung’ is the only team who can pick both the winners depending on the result of the men’s final.
The only change to the leaderboard is ‘Highly Strung’ moving up 12 places and into 11th.
Result on Day 13
