Us Open – Day 5

Day 5 had a little bit of everything. Some comfortable wins, some tight wins and some upsets. Svitolina, Krejcikova, Sabalenka and Mertens all came through their respective matches in straight sets. Svitolina and Krejcikova being the best ladies picks on day 5 – scoring 6 points each. The 12th seed Halep was up against 19th seed Rybakina and on paper it shaped up to be a great match. In reality it did not disappoint. Halep took an extremely tight first set. She eventually won it 13-11 in the tiebreak. Halep was the first to break in the 2nd set and led 3-1 before Rybakina broke back and it was level at 3-3 and the n 4-4. Rybakina then broke at 4-4 and served for the set at 5-4. She served it out to 15 and we were heading into a decider. Halep once again broke first and led 4-1 in the decider. That one break was enough as she went on to take the set and the match. She sets up an interesting 4th round encounter against 5th seed Svitolina. At the same time that match was on, there was another tight match on between Muguruza and Azarenka. The 9th seed, Muguruza, was to good in the deciding set and she booked her spot in the 4th round where she will meet the 8th seed, Krejcikova. Kerber was up against unseeded American Stephens. The first set was very one sided up until 5-2. Kerber then went on to win the next 3 games and it was level again at 5-5. Stephens importantly managed to hold and then broke Kerber and won the 1st set 7-5. Kerber used the little bit of momentum that she had and raced away in the 2nd set. Winning the set 6-2 with a double break. The deciding set remained on serve up until 3-3. Kerber managed to eventually break in the 7th game. She was 0-40 up but Stephens managed to save all 3 break points and bring up a game point. Kerber then won the next 3 points and she had the break. She backed up the break and led 5-3. Kerber then broke to win the match and booked her spot in the 4th round. In the night session we saw one of the biggest upsets so far in the ladies draw. 18 year old Fernandez knocked out 3rd seed Osaka in three sets. She will play 16th seed Kerber in the 4th round. In the Mens draw, Medvedev and Schwartzman both won in straight sets. Medvedev being the best pick scoring 8 points on day 5. Evans survived Popyrin. Evans found himself 2 sets down and managed to beat Popyrin in the 5th set tiebreaker. Auger-Aliassime beat 18th seed Bautista-Agut in 5 sets. And the last match on court was between 5th seed Rublev and American Tiafoe. Tiafoe managing to come through that match in 5 sets. A massive win for Big Foe.
