Australian Open – Day 9

Quarter-finals have been set and well in the ladies draw it is a fascinating 8 players who have made the quarters whereas in the mens draw most of the top 8 seeds made the quarters. It was only Fritz(12) instead Tsitsipas(7) and Hurkacz(9) instead of Rune(8).

So what exactly happened on day 9. Well day 9 started with 2 more ladies seeds dropping out of the tournament. 18th seed, Azarenka, who looked impressive in her win over Ostapenko in the 3rd round was beaten in straight sets by qualifier Yastremska. The 23 year old who made it through qualifying is playing the tournament of her career so far and will now face the 19 year old Noskova in the quarter-finals. Noskova played just 3 games against 19th seed, Svitolina, before the top seeded Ukranian had to retire due to a back injury. We wish her a speedy recovery. The 3rd ladies match saw a 3rd ladies seed drop out of the tournament. This time is was 26th seed, Paolini who lost in straight sets 6-4; 6-2 against 25 year old Kalinskaya. The last seed remaining in this side of the ladies draw is 12th seed, Zheng, who won comfortably against Dodin 6-0; 6-3 to book a meeting with Kalinskaya. All 4 ladies in this side of the draw have never made a grand slam quarter-final and now 1 of them will be competing in the ladies final on Saturday. Who will grab the chance.

The mens side of the draw was less dramatic as no upsets occurred on day 9. 3rd seed, Medvedev was cruising against Borges who played an impressive match to beat Dimitrov in round 3. Medvedev was leading 6-3; 7-6(4); 5-2 before Borges won 5 straight games to take the 3rd set 7-5 and take us to a 4th set. Medvedev however was not to fazed and won the 4th set 6-1 to book his spot in the quarter’s where he will face 9th seed, Hurkacz. The top seeded Polish player beating the mightily impressive Cazaux in straight sets 7-6(6); 7-6(3); 6-4. The match of the day was between 6th seed, Zverev, and 19th seed, Norrie. Zverev led the entire match but could not put the Brit away. Zverev took the first 7-5 but Norrie hit back taking the second 6-3. The Zverev led again as he took the 3rd 6-3 but once again it was Norrie who hit back as he took the 4th 6-4 and so the match entered the final set. The match was close throughout so it was fitting that it ended up going to the 10 point match tiebreaker. Zverev however played a very impressive tiebreaker to take it 10-3 and book his spot in the quarter’s. Last match on was Alcaraz who will be very pleased with his win over Kecmanovic. The Spaniard winning 6-4; 6-4; 6-0 meaning that he was the top male pick scoring 9 points on day 9. He sets up a mouth watering encounter against 6th seed, Zverev.

Onto the fantasy leaderboard and we have yet another new leader. ‘Tennis Addicts’ have now moved to the top of the leaderboard and sit on 175 points. 4 points behind and the biggest mover on day 9 was ‘Lorna’s Lucky 13’ who now sit in 2nd. ‘Serve with Eish’ move down 1 spot and sit in 3rd on 170 points. ‘Fraud Watch’ move back into the top 5 and sit in 4th on 165 points. ‘Faulty Feet’ and ‘Aussie Guess’ sit in a joint 5th and are just 1 point behind 4th place. 7th place is just 1 point behind them so this is certainly going to be a tight finish’. ‘Match Point’ hold onto the wooden spoon position and are now 9 points off their nearest challengers.
