Australian Open – Day 6

After the craziness of day 5 we were back to pretty much normal proceedings on day 6 with the odd suprise mixed in between.

Anisimova could not have asked for a better come back than this as she continued her incredible run here at the Aussie Open with a straight sets 7-5; 6-4 win over the other come back player Badosa who will be pleased to have made the 3rd round on her return. 2nd seed and defending champion, Sabalenka, was in imperious form today as she bulldozed her way to a 6-0; 6-0 perfect match against Tsurenko in the 3rd round. The defending champ looking very good in her fight to defend her title down under. Andreeva probably produced one of the greatest comebacks we have ever seen and definitely one of the greatest she will ever do. Parry won the first set 6-1 before Andreeva leveled the match at 1 set all with a 6-1 set too. Parry then raced away in the 3rd set and looked to have booked her spot in the next round as she led 5-1 and was serving for the match. Incredibly Parry was not able to produce one match point in 4 games as Andreeva pulled it back to 5-5 and then the 16 year old led 6-5. Parry was able to compose herself to take it to a 3rd set 10 point breaker. However it seemed to just be Andreeva’s day as she won the tiebreak 10-5 and sealed the comeback win. She will now face 9th seed, Krejcikova who is slowly coming back into form. The Czech player managing to beat the Aussie, Hunter in 3 sets…once again coming back from a set down. Kostyuk was another to come back from a set down today as she beat Avanesyan in 3 sets. The 21 year olds were battling it out for a spot in the 4th round and it is a huge opportunity for Kostyuk to make a grand slam quarter-final as she is up against Timofeeva in the next round. Timofeeva producing another amazing result defeating 10th seed, Haddad Maia 7-6(7); 6-3 to book her spot in the 4th round. 4th seed, Gauff, made light work of her American opponent Parks. The top seeded American lady dropping just 2 games on her way to the 4th round. Frech battled through another 3 set match as she booked her spot in the next round.

The mens day today was full of no surprises bar one match. That match was between 20th seed, Mannarino and 16th seed, Shelton. Mannarinno coming back from a 2 set to 1 deficit to defeat the young American in 5 sets. This is the 3rd 5-set win in a row by Mannarino. He is the first man to do this at the Aussie Open since Hrbaty who did it in 2006. He now faces the ultimate test against number 1 seed, Djokovic who beat 30th seed, Etcheverry 6-3; 6-3; 7-6(2) to book his spot in the 4th round. Sinner cruised through another round and looks very much like the one to beat. The Italian beating Baez 6-0; 6-1; 6-3 and will now face 15th seed, Khachanov who has played a good tournament so far. Consistently winning in 4 sets because today he notched up another 4 set win against Machac. 12th seed, Fritz was on the brink of losing in the opening round but now finds himself in the 4th round as he came back from losing the opening set to beat Marozsan in 4 sets. His reward is a meeting with 7th seed, Tsitsipas who continues to play well at the Aussie Open. The Greek beating the young van Assche 6-3; 6-0; 6-4 in the 3rd round. The last 2 mens matches on was 10th seed, De Minaur against Cobolli and 5th seed, Rublev against 29th seed, Korda. The Aussie fans were ecstatic as their top male continued his amazing form with another impressive win against Cobolli. De Minaur dropping just 7 games in 3 sets. Rublev who so nearly was knocked out in the opening round has started to find his groove at the Aussie Open 2024. The 5th seed beat Korda 6-2; 7-6(6); 6-4 and will now face De Minaur in what should be a tasty encounter.

Onto the Fantasy Leaderboard and we have a new leader on day 6. ‘Faulty Feet’ has moved to the top of the standings on 127 points and lead by 4 points over ‘Aussie Guess’ who continues to occupy a top 5 spot. ‘Serve with Eish’ sits in 3rd just 7 points off the top spot. ‘Tramline’ had a poor day as they dropped 2 spots to 4th and our leaders from yesterday drop 3 spots and sit in 5th along with ‘Nada AI’ who also sit in 5th 9 points off the leader. ‘Match Point’ just can’t seem to get off the bottom…They sit just 2 points off 79th spot which is occupied by ‘Champions’.
