Wimbledon Day 2

Some great tennis already at this years Wimbledon. Lots of 5 set matches, upsets and close calls for some of the favourites – it is only day 2. Another day which was affected by rain. Still not all the round 1 matches are complete and once again some matches have had to be suspended and carried over to day 3. What this does mean is that if it doesn’t rain on day 3, then lots of tennis to be played and for us, spectators, to watch. Barty was the first match on centre court. Having not played any matches on grass this year there were a few doubts over how she would play. She raced away in the first set taking it 6-1. Barty was then 5-4 serving for the match and Suarez Navarro played a great receiving game to survive in the match. She then went on to play a flawless tiebreak and we were heading into a decider. Barty stayed calm and composed and raced to a 5-0 lead and eventually taking the third 6-1. Federer followed on centre court and once again, there were some doubts on how he was going to play at this years Wimbledon. The first set was tightly contested with Federer managing to break at 5-4 to take the set 6-4. Mannarino served brilliantly in the 2nd set losing very few points on serve. This time we were heading to a tiebreak. A great tiebreak by Mannarino and we were level again at 1 set all. An early break for Mannarino in the third was good enough and Mannarino was now just a set away from defeating Federer in the 1st round of Wimbledon. Federer though came out all guns blazing in the 4th set and raced to a 5-2 lead. Sadly for Mannarino he had a nasty slip in the 7th game of the 4th set and because of the slip was forced to retire at the beginning of the 5th set. The last match on centre court was between Williams and Sasnovich. Williams raced to a 3-1 lead and then she too had a nasty slip. She could put no pressure on her ankle forcing her to retire at 3-3. Court 1 saw Zverev breeze past Griekspoor in straight sets. It also saw a good match between Struff and Medvedev. Medvedev playing very well to go 2 sets up. Struff though started to find his game in the third and took the match to a fourth. Medvedev managing to get through in a 4th set tiebreak. Court 1 also saw Kerber win in straights. Kyrgios and Humbert was moved onto court 1. Both players playing excellent tennis so late into the evening. Sadly the English curfew meaning the match was suspended at 3-3 in the decider.

Onto the fantasy league. Day 2 saw 8 ladies picks go out. Among them were: Williams, Riske, Kanepi, Li, Zidansek, Bertens,Stojanovic, Potapova. Day 3 saw only 2 male picks lose: De Minaur, Struff and Musetti.

We have a new leader on Day 2. Well done to ‘Miss Nic’ who leads by 6 points over yesterday’s leader ‘Nutty Choice 2’. With round 1 not complete yet, we are yet to see a representative leaderboard. Bring on Day 3!
