Aussie Open – Day 4
The Australian Open day 4 or must it be called the day of upsets has finished. What A Day!
Today we start with the mens draw. As per usual I will begin with the comfortable straight set wins. The 25th seed Brit, Dan Evans, won his match in straight sets along with Shelton, Dimitrov who is looking dangerous and will face Djokovic in the 3rd round and Rune. Tommy Paul played an impressive match as he came back from 2 sets to 1 down to defeat the 30th seed Davidovich Fokina. Brooksby continued the good day for Americans as he recorded his best ever result as he knocked out 3rd in the world and 2nd seed Casper Ruud in 4 sets. 5th seeded Rublev got past a tricky opponent in Ruusuvuori in 4 sets. JJ Wolf beat 23rd seed Schwartzman in straight sets. An impressive performance to book his spot in the 3rd round. The Australian wildcard Alexei Popyrin played a match to remember in front of his home crowd as he beat in form adn 8th seed Fritz. Popyrin was leading 2 sets to 1 and had a match point come and go in the 4th set as the match ended up going to 5. He held his nerve and won the 5th set comfortably 6 games to 2. Another unseeded American Mmoh recorded his best result as well as he got the better of 12th seed Zverev in 4 sets. Mmoh had to come back from 2 sets down in the 1st round and even had to save a match point in that match and now he finds himself in a grand slam 3rd round. Bautista-Agut the 24th seed was another player to come back from 2 sets down just as Felix Auger-Aliassime did yesterday. Bonzi knocked out another seed as he beat 14th seed Carreno Busta in a 5th set tiebreak. The Frenchman just as Bautista-Agut did came back from 2 sets to love down to win in 5 sets. Another player on day 4 to come back from 2 sets down was Andy Murray. Murray and Kokkinakis played for a whopping 5 hours and 45min and only finished at about 3/4 am local time. An outstanding performance by both but especially Murray as he beat Berrettini in 5 sets in the 1st round as well. Djokovic and De Minaur both lost the 2nd set in their respective matches and they both managed to comfortably win in 4 sets. Djokovic actually still scoring the most points by a male on day 4 (10 points).
In the ladies draw there were more upsets. American Volynets defeated the in form Kudermetova in 3 sets. The 9th seed just not able to find her best tennis when it mattered. Linette was another player to knock out a seed as she came back from a set down against 16th seed Kontaveit to win in 3 sets. Siegemund knocked out 27th seed, Begu, in 3 sets. Just like Linette she also lost the 1st set before taking the match in 3. Vekic was another to perform an upset as she knocked out 18th seed Samsonova in straight sets. The last upset of the day in the ladies draw was Vondrousova defeating number 2 in the world and 2nd seed Ons Jabeur in 3 sets. She was also the top lady scorer as she scored 10 points on day 4 for her respective teams. 5th seed Sabalenka destroyed American Rogers as she just dropped 4 games on her way to the 3rd round. Mertens, Giorgi, Pliskova, Zhang, Garcia and Bencic all won their respective matches in straight sets.
Onto the fantasy leaderboard and amazingly ‘Live once Serve Twice’ extend their lead to 11 points over Wizards. Our leaders also have not lost a player in the 1st 2 rounds which is incredible considering how many upsets there have been. They also have the best ladies and the best male teams so it could be very hard to stop them. In 3rd place moving up 2 spots is ‘Groundstroke’. 1 point behind in 4th sit ‘Down Under’ with ‘Drop Shots’ just 1 point behind in 5th. ‘Team Kickbutt’ and Klippies just 1 point off the top 5. In 63rd and currently winnning the wooden spoon is ‘Runners and Riders’.
