US Open – Day 1

Wow…Where do I start? The first day and already some big names have fallen. The big name that managed to come through her first round opponent was Serena Williams who managed to avoid retirement for now as she beat Kovinic 6-3; 6-3. The big name to have fallen on the ladies side was the 7th seed and one of the favourites to get far, Simona Halep. She lost to the world 124, Daria Snigur, in 3 sets. Garcia, Riske and Kudermetova started day 1 with straight set wins while the 3rd seeded Greek, Sakkari, struggled past Maria. Sakkari managing to beat the German after losing to her in the 3rd round of Wimbledon. Gauff lost just 5 games on her way to the 2nd round as she beat French player, Jeanjean. Haddad Maia didn’t drop a game as she won her first ever match at the US Open. Another big name to fall was the 10th seed and in form, Kasatkina who lost to unseeded Brit, Dart in 3 sets. Trevisan the 27th seed and Teichmann the 30th seed both lost their 1st round matches as day 1 proved a tough day for the seeds. Jabeur, Keys, Tomljanovic, Krejcikova and Fernandez all came through their matches in straight sets.

The mens draw was not very different when it comes to tight matches and upsets. Tommy Paul the 29th seed just squeezed past Zapata Miralles in 5 gruelling sets. Nava the wilcard upset Australian John Millman in another grueling 5 set match. Davidovich Fokina, Murray, Medvedev and Korda all came through their 1st round matches. Wolf knocked out 16th seeded Spaniard, Bautista-Agut, in straight sets (6-4 in all sets). 30th seeded American, Cressy sadly had to retire in the 3rd set against Fucsovics much to the disappointment of the home crowd. Berrettini, Ruud, De Minaur, Kyrgios, Draper and Bublik all came through their respective matches in straight sets. 31st seed, Basilashvilli disappointed again in a grand slam as he was knocked out in straight sets. Carreno Busta came through a Thiem who is looking for form in 4 sets while Khachanov had to come back from a set down to beat Kudla in 4 sets. Auger-Aliassime also needed 4 sets on his way to the 2nd round while van de Zandschulp needed all 5 sets to beat Machac. The night session conjured up some big upsets. 4th seed, Tsitsipas, was knocked out on day 1 as Galan managed to beat him in 4 sets. American and 10th seed, Taylor Fritz, was also knocked out by American Holt in 4 sets.

What does day 2 hold? If its anything like day 1 it could be a very interesting night of tennis to watch.

Due to all the upsets, most teams either lost their subs or desperately needed their subs. The picks that were lost today were: Tsitsipas (13 picks) , Fritz (17 picks) , Cressy (2 picks), Bautista-Agut (1 pick), Cerundolo (1 pick), Teichmann (1 pick), Vandeweghe (1 pick), Kasatkina (2 picks), Brengle (1 pick), Halep (25 picks).

Onto the leaderboard and our first leader of the last grand slam of the year is ‘My Dream Team’ who sits on 42 points after day 1. Just 3 points behind sits ‘Oscar Volley’. In 3rd place on 38 points is ‘Faulty Feet’ with ‘Wizards’ just 1 point behind them in 4th. There is a tie for 5th between ‘Body Shot’ and ‘Team Kickbutt’. In the wooden spoon position on 11 points is ‘NoDjok Again. ‘Only half the players have played so all to play for.
