Australian Open – Day 7
Day 7 and the end of round 3 and the first week of grand slam action for 2025. And oh my what a day of tennis we witnessed today. Many upsets and this has caused a little shake up at the top of the leaderboard. Certainly all to play for as we head into week 2 of the Aussie Open.
The day started off with an upset in the form of Michelsen beating 19th seed, Khachanov. Not one person had either of these men in their teams…but a great win for the young American who moves into week 2 of the Aussie Open for the 1st time. The next men’s match was yet another upset as Monfils rolled back the years on Margeret Court Arena to beat the in form and red hot 4th seed, Fritz. The American had dropped just 8 games on his way to the 3rd round before he lost to the in form Frenchman. Monfils winning 3-6; 7-5; 7-6(1); 6-4. 8th seed and the most picked substitute player, De Minaur came back from a set down to beat Cerundolo in 4 sets. Sonego continues his run at this years Aussie Open as he beat Marozsan in 4 sets. 21st seed, Shelton had never beaten Musetti in the last 2 matches they had played. This time however the 21st seed beat the 16th seed in 4 sets to book his spot in the 4th round. 13th seed, Rune once again survived a tough match. He beat unseeded Kecmanovic from 2 sets to 1 down to book his spot in the next round. However his next opponent is number 1 in the world Sinner who cruised past Giron in straight sets.
Onto the ladies draw and well number 2 seed, Swiatek, absolutely destroyed Raducanu. The Polish player losing just 1 game to win 6-1; 6-0 to book her spot in the 4th round. 8th seed, Navarro made it 3, 3 set wins in a row as she beat unseeded Jabeur. The American continues her run at this years Aussie Open. The lucky loser Lys who came in because Kalinskaya pulled out 10min before her match has now made it into the 4th round after her 3 set win over Christian. What a memorable tournament for the lucky loser. 9th seed, Kasatkina continued her run as she beat 24th seed Putintseva in straight sets. 6th seed, Rybakina also continued her run as she beat Yastremska in straight sets. Yastremska who was picked by 17 teams so a big loss for those teams. Kudermetova continues to find some of her old form as she beat Haddad Maia the 15th seed and dropped just 6 games in the win. Svitolina the 28th seed, followed in her husbands footsteps, Monfils, as she also beat a 4th seed and also on Margeret Court Arena. Svitolina beat Paolini in 3 sets. She lost the opening set 6-2 before winning 6-4; 6-0 to book her spot in the 4th round. Last match on was between 19th seed, Keys and 10th seed, Collins. Keys beating her compatriot in straight sets 6-4; 6-4.
Onto the leaderboard and we have a new leader…’Wallabie Wannabes’. They moved up an impressive 16 spots and now lead the way as we head into the 2nd week. ‘Heksie’s Pot Luck’ will not give up their 2nd spot and remain in 2nd and are still just 1 point away from the leader. A gap is starting to open up however as 5 points further back is 3rd place ‘Buena Suerta’. Lorna trying to retain her crown her at the Aussie Open. There is a tie for 4th between ‘Ally Cats’ and ‘Miss Hits’. They are just 1 point behind 3rd. The last prize position is also tied between leader from yesterday ‘Kick My Ace’ and ‘Faulty Feet’.
The battle for 41st spot is between ‘Eeny Meeny’ and ‘Laughing Kookaburra’. The 69th spot is also hotly contested as ‘Royal Gamers’ and ‘Dropshots’ battle it out down at the bottom.
