Australian Open – Semi Finals (1)

Another great day of tennis today. I can’t believe how quickly these 2 weeks have gone. We already have 3 out the 4 finalists. Day 11 started with a massive match between Osaka and Williams. They had played three times before and Osaka had won 2 of the 3 matches. The most memorable of the three being the 2018 US Open final. Williams had a dream start leading 2-0 but Osaka hit back and took the first set 6-3. She went on to win the second set 6-4. Osaka is aiming to win her 4th grand slam and her second Australian Open. Serena was disappointed with the amount of errors she made and broke down in her post match press conference.

The second match of the day was the other ladies semi-final which was between 25th seed Muchova and 22nd seed Brady. Both ladies were aiming to reach their first ever grand slam final. This made it an intriguing encounter. Brady started off well taking the first set 6-4 but then her level dropped. Muchova broke Brady in the opening game of the second set and controlled the set thereafter. Muchova managing to break Brady twice and she took the second set 6-3. The third set started off with both ladies holding their serve comfortably. A third game was a very poor game for Muchova and that handed Brady the very important break. The final game of the match was filled with drama. Brady playing three brilliant points and managed to be 40-15 up and had two match points. Muchova never gave up and made it back to deuce. Muchova then earned herself a break point which she couldn’t convert. Brady then had her 3rd match point but that was also saved. Muchova then earned herself another break point to make it 5-5 but once again she couldn’t convert. Brady eventually managed to take her 5th match point and make it to her first grand slam final where she will meet Osaka.

The last match of the day was between number 1 seed Novak Djokovic and the qualifier Aslan Karatsev. Djokovic started well and took the first set 6-3 and then found himself 5-2 up serving for the second set. An amazing effort saw Karatsev break back and he held onto his serve making the score 5-4. The 10th game of the second set was filled with more drama as Djokovic had to save 2 break points but he got through the game and won the seocnd set 6-4. He broke Karatsev in the first game of the third set but the Russian wasn’t going to go away and broke back making the score 2-2. Djokovic then won 4 games in a row to book himself a spot in Sunday nights final. With this win he makes it 41 wins to no losses at the Australian Open when he’s been the number 1 seed. Can he win his 9th Australian Open and his 18th grand slam title.

Now onto the all important leaderboard! The lead has been retaken by “TJ Squared”. “Team Q” managed to stay in second and “Guys and Dolls” have now dropped down to third. It looks like it is turning into a 2 horse race between “TJ Squared” and “Team Q” but hopefully for “Guys and Dolls” they can hang on to the front two. Well done to “TJ Squared” for picking both of the ladies finalists. This means that “TJ Squared” is guaranteed a bonus 10 points for picking the winner. “Williams and Muchova were the 2 picks that were lost today. Here is the leaderboard for Day 11.

“TJ Squared” lead once again with “Team Q” hot on their heals. “”Guys and Dolls” take a big hit today.

We have lost our 5th team today…”Jess-granny”. With 2 picks playing tomorrow, it’s still all to play for. Just a reminder that the winner of the grand slam wins a bonus 10 points. This could bring about some big changes in the leaderboard. Good luck for tomorrows match!
