Day 3 was filled with elation, heartache and tears as a legend of our sport has played his last match. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga has an amazing career and he deserves a fantastic retirement. The day started off with a big upset when Rune beat 14th seed, Shapovalov, in straight sets. Ruusuvuori and Sousa both came through in tight 5 set matches. Frenchman, Hugo Gaston, was up against 19th seed, De Minaur, in what on paper was a mouth-watering encounter. In reality it did not disappoint with the match having to be decided in a final set super-tiebreak. The Frenchman delighting the crowd as he took the tiebreak 10-4 to knock out the 19th seeded Australian. Cecchinato was another man to comeback from 2 sets to love down as he beat Spaniard Andujar in 5 sets. Gilles Simon also pleased the French crowd as he won a late night thriller. Simon found himself 2 sets to love up against 16th seed Spaniard, Carreno Busta. Before Carreno Busta fought back and made it a tie game at 2 sets all. Simon went on to win the 5th set 6-4. The other late night thriller was between 4th seed, Tsitsipas, and Italian Musetti. Tsitsipas started off brilliantly but Musetti played exceptionally well to take the first set 7-5. He carried this momentum into the second set to lead the 4th seed and one of the favourites at this years French Open 2 sets to love. Tsitsipas showed his class and why he is 4 in the world as he fought back to book his spot in the 2nd round. Medvedev, Rublev, Sonego, Tiafoe, Hurkacz and Sinner all came through their 1st round encounters relatively comfortably.

On the ladies side there were no real upsets for once. Ostapenko, Collins, Pegula, Cornet, Alexandrova, Putinseva, Badosa, Zidansek and Kasatkina all won their 1st round matches in straight sets. Pliskova had to come back from a set down to defeat French player, Andrianjafitrimo in three sets. Giorgi also lost the 1set and managed also managed to beat Zhang in 3 sets. Halep beat 18 year old, German, Schunk in three sets. The 18 year old played a flawless 2nd set but in the end Halep was just to good for her. The 7th seed, Sabalenka, lost the first set to French player Paquet. She did however keep her campaign alive as she took the match in three sets.

Onto the fantasy league and day 3 saw more picks bowing out at the first hurdle. Carreno Busta, De Minaur, Musetti, Shapovalov, Harris, Humbert, Paul, Vesely, Paire and Mannarino all lost on day 3.

We have the first change at the top. ‘Chalk Dust’ takes top spot after the end of the 1st round. Sadly for them there are still a lot of matches to be played so it won’t be easy to keep that top spot. 2 points behind the leader is ‘Born 2 Serve’ in 2nd place. ‘Seize the Clay’ had an amazing day as they jumped up 41 places and from 44th yesterday, they sit in 3rd today. ‘Billancourt’ and Forever and a Clay are tied in 4th spot. Another team who jumped up over 40 spots was ‘The Racqueets’ who managed to move from 48th to 6th. Day 3 also saw the wooden spoon change hands from ‘Madame Monsieur’ to ‘Prince of Clay’.

The Top Half

The Bottom Half

Matches from day 3

Collins(9) beat Tomova – 6-0; 6-4

Rogers beat Martincova – 6-4; 6-3

Giorgi(28) beat Zhang – 3-6 ;6-2; 6-2

Pegula(11) beat Wang – 6-2; 6-4

Halep(19) beat Schunk – 6-4; 1-6; 6-1

Sabalenka(7) beat Paquet – 2-6; 6-3; 6-4

Rune beat Shapovalov(14) – 6-3; 6-1; 7-6(4)

Sousa beat Tseng – 6-7(5); 6-1; 4-6; 6-1; 6-4

Ruusuvuori beat Humbert – 6-2; 2-6; 6-7(4); 6-4; 6-2

Ruud(8) beat Tsonga – 6-7(6); 7-6(4); 6-2; 7-6(0)

Gaston beat De Minaur(19) – 4-6; 6-2; 6-3; 0-6; 7-6(10-4)

Tsitsipas(4) beat Musetti – 5-7; 4-6; 6-2; 6-3; 6-2

Simon beat Carreno Busta(16) – 6-4; 6-4; 4-6; 1-6; 6-4

Matches to Watch on Day 4

Zapata Miralles vs Fritz(13) (12:15)

Zverev(3) vs Baez (13:15)

Djokovic(1) vs Molcan (13:30)

Munar vs Schwarztman(15) (14:15)

Ramos-Vinolas vs Alcaraz(6) (14:15)

Korda(27) vs Gasquet (15:30)

Moutet vs Nadal(5) (20:45)

Sasnovich vs Raducanu(12) (11:00)

Azarenka(15) vs Petkovic (11:00)

Muchova vs Sakkari(4) (12:15)

Anisimova(27) vs Vekic (13:00)

Cirstea(26) vs Stephens (14:15)

Siniakova vs Fernandez(17) (14:15)

Bencic(14) vs Andreescu (15:15)

Round 1 is finally complete and woah was it full of surprises.
