This ,can you believe it, is the fifth Australian Open I have hosted a fantasy league for and it was certainly one of the closest finishes I have seen. But before the excitement of the leaderboard a short recap of the men’s final.

It was between number 1 in the world and defending champion Sinner and number 2 in the world Zverev. Sinner played the better tennis in the opening set and Zverev unfortunately had no answers as he lost it 6-3. The 2nd set, the German hung on and had a few chances at 0-30 but every time Sinner managed to come back with the answers and in the end the set went the distance to a tiebreak. The tiebreak was tightly contested and at 4-4, Sinner managed to get the mini break due to a let cord can you believe it. The next 2 points were on the Sinner serve and were played with authority and all of a sudden it was 2 sets to love to the Italian. It looked an impossible task now for the German and unfortunately it was in fact that as Sinner took the set 6-3 and with it the match. He successfully defended his title and won a 3rd consecutive hard court grand slam. He also became just the 3rd male to win a grand slam facing 0 break points. Only Nadal and Federer and Pete Sampras have done that before. An amazing achievement from the Italian.

Now onto the fantasy leaderboard.

And in first place finished ‘Miss Hits’ who will be taking home our grand prize of R1100. Despite not having Sinner in the men’s final she had a lead which could not be caught as she did have Zverev, Sabalenka and Keys and so had 3 out of the 4 finalists. Nikki wins her first ever first place prize and puts her name onto the prestigious winner’s board. Miss Hits had an amazing run and was at the top for the majority of the tournament and made her move to the front right at the end due to the great win from the 19th seed, Keys. She also had Badosa as a substitute who was never used as her top 3 ladies went to far. Well Well done!!

In 2nd Place was not 1 but 2 teams. ‘Wallabie Wannabes’ and ‘Eish’ both finished with 284 points after 15 days of tennis and completely different teams. Just exceptional really. They were just 3 points behind the winner in the end. ‘Wallabie Wannebes’ looked like they had the win in the bag in the middle of the final week but due to the win from Keys, the win fell away right at the end. Sinner did however win which allowed her to stay second because ‘Eish’ had both Zverev and Sinner at the end. Moving up from 4th after the ladies final, Eish managed to jump up to a joint 2nd thanks to having both male finalists. Well done to Pat and Katherine for rounding out the podium. 2nd place was R500 and 3rd place was R300 and so the final prize will be R400 for each of them.

Then the man who stopped the top 6 from being just ladies was the one and only ‘Todd Micklethwaite’ with his team ‘Net Profit’. He was also the first team to pick both the ladies and men’s winner and yet the best he could do was 4th. Amazingly on day 6 he sat all the way down in 47th place and somehow in the 2nd week slowly but surely made his way to the prize positions eventually settling in 4th and winning R200 for his efforts. Well done!

In 5th position was ‘Faulty Feet‘ and our one and only ‘Kunnie Fradley’. Faulty feet did well to finish in 5th position and hovered in and out of the prize positions. They eventually settled in 5th and will take home R100.

The last prize position and 6th spot to round out a ladies domination in this years Aussie Open was ‘Fantasy Alive‘. Lorna does love a prize and she once again picks up a prize. This time just R50 but she worked hard for that R50 and was just the 2nd team to have both winners. Just 2 points separated 6th and 7th. Just incredible.

The last spot prize which was yet to be decided was 41st spot and you won’t believe it but it was joint as ‘Calf Cramps’ and ‘Eeny Meeny’ both finished on 218 points. Therefore the wheel of fortune has needed to be taken out.

And the winner of the 41st spot prize is…‘Calf Cramps’. Well done to Wendell Wessells who can take home R50.

Just a reminder that 69th spot and taking home R50 is ‘
