The clay seems to always conjure up some surprises. These results have already seen many teams either have to use their substitute player or lose their substitute player which has meant that some teams have started off on the back foot.

I will start with the ladies draw and yesterday we saw Sabalenka cruise through her first round match against up and coming Ukranian Kostyuk. Mertens, Giorgi, Zheng, Potapova, Samsonova, Begu, Pegula and Kasatkina all booked their spots in the 2nd round with straight set wins. Frech looked impressive as she took her match against 29th seed Zhang, 6-1; 6-1. The 21st seed, Linette, was another seed who fell on the 1st day as she was beaten by unseeded Fernandez in 3 sets. The big name that fell on day 1 was the 8th seed, Sakkari, who lost to unseeded Muchova in straight sets. This saw 22 teams very disappointed as they had her as their substitute player.

Yesterday in the mens draw we saw 2 seeds fall while all the other matches went according to plan for the seeds. The 20th seed, Dan Evans, lost in straight sets to Australian Kokkinakis while up and coming American Ben Shelton who was the 30th seed lost to unseeded but pretty good clay court player Sonego in 4 sets. The 13th seed, Hurkacz, had to battle hard against unseeded Goffin. Hurkacz managed to get the job done in 5 sets but it was a great match between the 2 players. Khachanov was another seed who had to find his best tennis to survive in the tournament. He found himself down 2 sets to love down against unseeded Frenchman Lestienne. He then somehow managed to find his best tennis as he soared back dropping just 6 games in the next 3 sets to book his spot in the 2nd round. Griekspoor, Kubler and Borges also won their 1st round matches in 5 sets. Borges beating Isner in a 5th set 10 point tiebreak 11-9. Tsitsipas and Rublev both booked their spots in the 2nd round with four set wins while Musetti got the job done in straight sets to the delight of the Italian fans.

Onto tennis which was played today and well the upsets just keep on coming as we saw 16th seed, Pliskova, lose against unseeded Stephens. The big name to lose though was the 12th seed, Belinda Bencic, who lost in 3 sets to 20 year old Elina Avanesyan. Trevisan ,the 26th seed, was the 3rd seed to fall today as she lost to Svitolina who is continuing her good form after winning Strasbourg just 2 days ago. The 11th seed, Kudermetova, also fell at the first hurdle as she loses to Schmiedlova in straight sets. Italian Cocciaretto managed to beat 10th seed, Kvitova, in straight sets 6-3; 6-4. It got a bit nervy for her near the end as she didn’t serve it out at 5-2 but thankfully for her sake she managed to serve it out at the second time of asking. Pera, Vekic, Pavlyuchenkova, Vondrousova, Putinseva and Haddad Maia all managed to win their respective matches in straight sets. Keys, Alexandrova and Garcia struggled but came through their first round matches in 3 sets.

Picks who have fallen in the past 2 days:
Ladies: Sakkari, Bencic, Kudermetova, Pliskova, Teichmann, Collins, Maria, Kanepi, Linette, Brengle, Kontaveit, Cornet, Niemeier, Trevisan, Zidansek, Sasnovich, Siniakova, Kudermetova, Kvitova.

Mens: Thiem, Auger-Aliassime, Isner, Lajovic, Cressy, Struff, Draper, Shelton, Ramos-Vinolas, Wu, Evans, van de Zandschulp, Zapara Miralles.

Onto the Leaderboard and it is ‘Drop Shots’ who lead the way after the 1st 2 days of tennis (This is not taking into account Sinner or Ostapenko’s games as they are still playing at the time of writing).
